Shakira’s Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran Tour concert at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts was called off just hours before she was due to take to the stage on Thursday night
Shakira’s highly-anticipated concert in Boston, Massachusetts, was abruptly cancelled just hours before she was set to dazzle the crowd at the iconic Fenway Park on Thursday night (May 29). It follows a highly infectious disease ravaging one of her previous tour dates.
The chart-topping songstress was slated to bring her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran Tour to the revered venue, but the plug was pulled at the eleventh hour, leaving fans stunned. Organisers cited “unforeseen circumstances” as the reason for the cancellation and offered refunds to disappointed ticket holders. In a double whammy, another concert featuring country music stars Jason Aldean and Brooks Dunn, scheduled for the following night (May 30), was also axed.
Fenway Park’s social media accounts issued a statement explaining: “Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Shakira and Jason Aldean and Brooks Dunn performances originally scheduled for May 29th and May 30th, respectively, at Fenway Park have been cancelled.
“Refunds will be available at your point of purchase. We apologise for the inconvenience.”
While no further details were provided, sources indicate that structural concerns at the venue might have led to the cancellations.
A source revealed to PEOPLE: “During a routine pre-show check, structural elements were identified as not being up to standard, so the shows were cancelled. All team members are safe.”
Speculation swirled on social media, with some suggesting issues with the stage roof might have been the culprit, although officials have yet to comment on these claims.
The two cancelled shows were part of the Fenway Concert Series, which was supposed to kick off with Shakira’s performance on Thursday (May 29) and run through to September, featuring a diverse lineup of acts.
Joining Shakira, The Lumineers, the Jonas Brothers, Chris Brown, The Who, and My Chemical Romance, Fenway Park is set to welcome Hozier for a double whammy of shows on 23 and 24 June.
Shakira, who had already jetted into Boston before her gig got axed, took to Instagram with a snap of a scrumptious spread of sweets, captioning it: “Hello, Boston! What a sweet welcome!”
The Hips Don’t Lie singer is all set to hit the stage again this Saturday (May 31) at Nationals Park in Washington, DC.
Her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour kicked off with a bang in Brazil back in February, and the North American stint began in Charlotte, North Carolina on May 13. With pit stops in hotspots like Miami, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and more, the tour will wrap up on June 30 in San Francisco, California, before heading to Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Peru.
