The Ugly Stepsister is a re-telling of the iconic fairytale Cinderella, but even seasoned horror fans have been left shaken by the graphic and gory scenes that take place throughout the film
The Ugly Stepsister is a Cinderella re-telling that will make your skin crawl and your stomach churn.
The gruesome film follows Elvira, a normal young girl considered “ugly” by her peers, as she battles against her “conventionally attractive” stepsister in a world where beauty is everything.
“She resorts to extreme measures to captivate the prince, amidst a ruthless competition for physical perfection.”
The twisted YouTube trailer shows Elvira undergoing a brutal cosmetic procedure without anaesthetic as she struggles with her own appearance. Gruesome scenes show her covered in blood, bandages, cuts and bruises as she vies for the prince’s love.
Down in the comments, horror fans praised the trailer and one person wrote: “I’ve always wanted a real take on the original Cinderella tale and this feels like the closest thing I’ve seen.”
Another said that this version “seems closer to the actual fairy tale” while someone compared the trailer to The Substance. Someone else noted: “After The Substance, body horror is SO back.”
“Giving Victorian Substance via Bridgerton and I’m living for it,” gushed another film buff, while a second person chimed in: “Reminds me of “Black Swan” in a different time period.”
Someone else exclaimed: “Never had a trailer make my skin crawl like that,” while another comment read: “I love how it’s telling the [point of view] of the stepsister!!! Very different, excited to see.”
The Ugly Stepsister stars Lea Myren, Ane Dahl Torp and Thea Sofie Loch Næss. The film was written and directed by Emilie Blichfeldt.
One IMDb review says that the Cinderella re-telling is “very gory” but “more of a psychological horror”.
They praised the lead actress’ performance and the supporting cast, while also noting that the film’s low budget does not affect the final product.
“I’m going to assume it was a low budget…but it didn’t look or FEEL low budget. The period costumes look great, the makeup snd physical effects don’t look cheap….”
“The cinematography (especially the fantasy sequences) and more specifically the sound design doesn’t [make it] look or sound like a cheap movie. So it seems they’ve spent their money wisely.”
