George Lucas, creator of Star Wars, recently revealed why Yoda talks backwards over 45 years after the little green creature first appeared on our screens in The Empire Strikes Back
Yoda’s usual reverse speech pattern has been explained by Star Wars creator George Lucas.
While speaking to Variety, Lucas discussed everyone’s favourite guy and the reason behind his unconventional habit.
Lucas said: “Because if you speak regular English, people won’t listen that much, but if he had an accent, or it’s really hard to understand what he’s saying, they focus on what he’s saying.”
“He was basically the philosopher of the movie. I had to figure out a way to get people to actually listen, especially 12-year-olds.”
The little green guy was a Jedi Grand Master who led the Jedi order in the lead up to the destruction of the Sith and the move into the Galactic Empire.
Yoda’s distinctive character traits include green skin, large pointed ears that stick out from the side of his head, wrinkles, claw-like fingers and tattered robes.
He first appeared in The Empire Strikes Back and has starred in a number of comics, novels and video games based on the sci-fi franchise. Yoda was 900 when he died in Return of the Jedi.
Aside from his iconic reverse speech pattern, there was consistent mystery surrounding his origin. No-one knows where his home planet is, what it is called or his species.
Other known members are Yaddle, a force-sensitive female who sat on the Jedi Council on Coruscant, and Din Grogu also known as Baby Yoda, a male toddler of the same species who first appeared in the Disney+ series The Mandalorian.
The Bear actor Jeremy Allen White will be starring in the upcoming film Mandalorian and Grogu as Jabba the Hutt’s son Rotta.
As he doesn’t have any human sons it is assumed that White will be lending his voice for the creature role, although nothing has been confirmed.
The actor will be joining Pedro Pascal and Alien icon Sigourney Weaver, with John Favreau set to direct. The film is expected to air on 22 May 2026.
