A beloved Superman actress, who shot to fame after starring as Lois Lane in the superhero franchise, suffered with severe mental health throughout her life before dying by suicide
One Superman star suffered with severe mental health issues while soaring to Hollywood stardom.
Margot Kidder was best known for her role in the 1978 Superman movie alongside actor Christopher Reeve and starred in four of the Superman franchise’s films. She quickly became a well-known actress, however she suffered from “mind flights” due to bipolar disorder.
Things took a turn for the worst back in the 1990s when Margot was left homeless in California, later placed in psychiatric care. She was also reportedly seen searching through rubbish for food and without many of her teeth.
She spoke to People in 1996 and branded it “the most public freak-out in history,” comparing herself to “one of those ladies you see talking to the space aliens on the street corner in New York”.
However, the Superman star went on to become a strong advocate for mental health and was open about her struggles. She once told People: “The reality of my life has been grand and wonderful, punctuated by these odd blips and burps of madness.”
She once admitted that she called dealing with her demons “keeping the monsters in,” and said she knew it “wasn’t socially acceptable” to discuss “the time you got homogenised with pine cones”.
Margot’s first suicide attempt came at the tender age of 14 after her boyfriend decided he wanted to break up: “It never occurred to anyone to send me to a shrink, I was just a teenager with a broken heart.”
She sadly died back in 2018. Her friend found her body in Livingston, Montana, where she had lived for many years helping drug addicts.
Her death was ruled a suicide and her daughter Maggie spoke about the revelation: “It’s a big relief that the truth is out there. It’s important to be open and honest so there’s not a cloud of shame in dealing with this.”
