Switzerland’s Eurovision act has an unexpected link to the UK as the singing competition’s final aired on 17 May, with a surprise guest appearing during a green screen segment of the show
Switzerland’s Eurovision entry has a surprising link to the United Kingdom.
The X Factor fans will recognise Scottish singer-songwriter Ili, real name Emily Middlemas, from the eleventh and thirteenth series of the show. She appeared in the Eurovision final while waving a flag at the camera during a green screen segment.
During her first stint on The X Factor, Emily did not make it to the live shows but after two years, she returned as the ninth contestant to be eliminated. She competed under her real name but back in 2019 the star began using the alias Ili.
Emily took to Instagram to post a selfie in front of an aeroplane with the caption: “Pinch me, on my way to Switzerland to see @zoe.me.music perform a song we wrote together in front on millions of people for Eurovision!!!!”
“Our song ‘Voyage’ is about how people are like flowers when nurtured, they bloom into something beautiful. but when cut down, that beauty fades. To honour that message, I got the whole team a pin badge of the flower of Scotland.”
“The support back at home is just incredible. I spoke to @heartscotland this morning, which you can catch in the @global player app if you missed it at 7:30AM. I will be chatting with @bbcradioscot around 1:20PM and will be on @bbcscotland news at six on your [TVs] to chat about the whole experience, live from Switzerland.”
Fans rushed to shower her with praise as one person typed: “Oh sick!! One of the best tonight for sure, congrats,” and another added: “I adore this song. Easily the most touching song in this years contest.”
Others wished her “congratulations” and said they were “so proud” of Emily’s accomplishment. Elsewhere in Eurovision final news, viewers were forced to do a double take after thinking they’d spotted Shania Twain on stage.
Melody, a singer who represented Spain with her song Esa Diva, performed wearing a black bodysuit, a large black hat and giant shoulder pads. Fans took to X/Twitter to joke: “Shania Twain singing for #Spain #Eurovision.”
“Spain: Is that a seductive Spanish Shania Twain,” asked another viewer. One fan branded her “Shania Spain” while someone else wrote: “Spain is giving me Latina Shania Twain.”
