Boygenius singer and songwriter Lucy Dacus has come forward to confirm that she is the ‘Lucy’ who Taylor Swift mentions in her track The Tortured Poets Department
US singer Lucy Dacus has confirmed that she is the “Lucy” name-dropped in Taylor Swift’s album The Tortured Poets Department.
Taylor’s army of fans turn codebreaker every time she drops new music, trying to work out who and what her songs are about. So there has been a lot of buzz about the mysterious “Lucy” mentioned in the title track of the star’s 2024 release, which she unveiled during her record-breaking Eras tour.
The song includes the lines: “Sometimes, I wonder if you’re gonna screw this up with me / But you told Lucy you’d kill yourself if I ever leave / And I had said that to Jack about you, so I felt seen / Everyone we know understands why it’s meant to be / ‘Cause we’re crazy.”

It’s generally thought that the track is about Taylor’s brief relationship with Matty Healy. And fans were convinced that the “Jack” mentioned was the Grammy-winner’s producer, Jack Antonoff.
Matty’s friend Lucy, of Boygenius, has now said she is the Lucy mentioned. Opening up to People, she revealed that Taylor asked her permission before including her name in the lyrics.
Quizzed about it by the mag, she replied: “I think it’s fair game to say ‘yes’. She actually texted me and asked for my approval.”
She said when she listened to the album it was “so crazy”, as it was the first time Taylor had released an album since they became friends. Lucy explained: “So I was like, ‘This is really weird. This voice that I’ve heard basically what feels like my whole waking life saying my name’.”
“It was definitely an experience,” added the singer-songwriter. “I sat down and I was like, ‘Huh. Wow’.”
Taylor and The 1975’s Matty, who is the son of Loose Women star Denise Welch, are thought to have had a short-lived romance in 2023. There were reports that the pair had been seen out together early that year and Matty also appeared at Eras concerts.
There were various whisperings of crushes and a budding romance, but by June that year it seems it was all over. TMZ reported that they had split up and that the Shake It Off singer was single again.
The star has now moved on with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. The pair were linked late in 2023 and were at the centre of romance rumours for weeks before making it official.
Taylor appeared to confirm it in September when she went to watch her new man on the field. She was spotted cheering Travis on as the Chiefs played the Chicago Bears, which everyone took to mean they were an item.
