The three-time Oscar winner has been called a ‘hypocrite’ as he previously slammed AI but has recently suggested how using it could help cut filming costs
Iconic movie director James Cameron has been dubbed a “hypocrite” as he has U-turned on using AI in Hollywood to make movies.
The star’s films have previously predicted machine-led warfare, but Cameron has now joined the board of Stability AI and suggested AI could cut the cost of a movie in half. The 70-year-old previously told CTV news the ‘weaponisation of AI is the biggest danger’ to society.
Avatar creator Cameron told THR that he is now looking at how AI could cut the costs of movies. Avatar: The Way of Water cost $400million to make.
But he has previously said that the upcoming blockbuster Avatar: Fire and Ash will start with: “No generative AI was used in the making of this film.”
When discussing his move to Stability AI, he said: “The goal was to understand the space, to understand what’s on the minds of the developers. What are they targeting? What’s their development cycle? How much resources you have to throw at it to create a new model that does a purpose built thing, and my goal was to try to integrate it into a VFX workflow.”
He added that if we want to continue seeing “big effects-heavy” films “we’ve got to figure out how to cut the cost of that in half”.
Cameron said that artificial intelligence could help filmmakers “create their visions more fully”.
In 2023, the Titanic Director said: “You could imagine an AI in a combat theatre, the whole thing just being fought by the computers at a speed humans can no longer intercede, and you have no ability to deescalate.”
He said his film Terminator was a warning against AI.
Fans reacted on social media blasting Cameron for change of heart, with one saying: “You literally wrote and directed two movies showing the consequences of humanity putting their faith in AI you people are the absolute worst.”
The filmmaker told CTV previously that he doesn’t “know anyone that’s even thinking about having AI write a screenplay”.
He added: “You have to be human to write that.”
Terminator star Arnold Schwarzenegger has also warned the public that The Terminator has “become a reality”, while onstage during An Evening with Arnold Schwarzenegger at Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.
“It’s not any more fantasy or kind of futuristic. It is here today. And so this is the extraordinary writing of Jim Cameron.”
