Eileen Fulton has passed away. The seasoned actress, famed for her portrayal of Lisa Miller in As the World Turns – a role that earned her the title of daytime television’s first villainess – died on 14 July in Asheville, North Carolina. Aged 91, she had been experiencing deteriorating health, as confirmed by her family in an obituary.

Eileen graced As the World Turns from May 1960 until its final episode in September 2010 on CBS, marking her as one of the longest-serving soap actors in US television history, despite her character initially being conceived for a brief stint.

Born Margaret Elizabeth McLarty, Eileen was honoured with an induction into the Soap Opera Hall of Fame in 1998 and received a Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004.

Raised in Asheville, Eileen relocated to New York to chase her acting dreams after earning a music degree from Greensboro College in 1956.

In New York she honed her craft under the tutelage of renowned acting coaches Sanford Meisner and Lee Strasberg at the Neighborhood Playhouse, as well as dance instructor Martha Graham. Her big-screen debut came in 1960 with Girl of the Night.

A woman of many talents, Eileen also penned works and showcased her singing chops in a cabaret act for years in venues across New York and Los Angeles.

During her tenure on As the World Turns – which was broadcast live at the time – she simultaneously treaded the boards on Broadway in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf and in off-Broadway musical The Fantasticks.

She penned her first autobiography, How My World Turns, in 1970 and collaborated on her second, As My World Still Turns, a quarter of a century later. Eileen also authored a collection of murder-mystery books and a novel named Soap Opera.
