Celebs and the rest of the uber-rich will be descending on the Met Gala once again, however, many say that nothing beats Rihanna’s 2015 outfit – it went down a treat with fashionistas and meme lords
The annual Met Gala kicks off again this evening, which you’ll expect to see some mega-rich celebs and notable names in fashion grace the carpet with their daring looks. This year’s theme for the fashion (and charity) bonanza is ‘tailored for you’ for the exhibition in New York, which is titled ‘Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.’
It’s a nod to guest curator Monica Miller, who inspired the theme with her 2009 book ‘Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity’.
Guests have been told to take the theme with “creative interpretation”, so viewers could be seeing all sorts from the hyper-exclusive attendee list – that apparently costs around $75,000 (£56,000) for a ticket.
While many are eager to see what their favourite celebs come dressed in this year, some take the Met Gala as a moment to reflect on the most iconic outfits of the past.
And one of the most memorable outfits from the 21st century is Rihanna’s huge yellow dress. Although the popstar-turned-entrepreneur looked stunning in the elegant number, many took to opportunity to compare her outfit to a ‘steak bake’.
In October, Rihanna, who has mostly kept out of the limelight in the last 10 years, shared that she has “planned” to turn up at the Met Gala this year.
So, in honour of Met Gala day – and a hopeful attendance of Rihanna – let’s take a deeper dive into of one the most popular attendees and her most ‘hall of fame’ outfits to date – including where you can see it now…
What is Rihanna’s most iconic Met Gala dress?
2015 was arguably a simpler time, but not for fashion. Rihanna made the Met Gala one to remember with her take on the theme “China: Through the Looking Glass.”
The music icon graced the Metropolitan Museum of Art in a spectacular number that made her look like she was part of some royal family.
Rihanna rocked a canary yellow, imperial print gown that featured a 16ft train and weighed 55lbs. The fur-lined masterpiece was handcrafted by designer Guo Pei, that took her two years to complete.
After learning of the theme, Rihanna searched online for the perfect dress where she came across Guo Pei’s, from Hong Kong, marvellous creation titled ‘The Yellow Queen’ gown.
It earnt Rihanna some serious fashion clout, and put Pei’s name – and designs – on the global stage. The gown was so big and heavy, the star had to get into a stretch limo to get to the Gala.
When Rihanna arrived, it took four men to carry – what is deemed – the most elaborate train in Meta Gala up the stairs. It’s thought that she changed her outfit once inside the charity ball.
How did social media react?
Although Rihanna has gone down as one of the best dressed in Met Gala history thanks to Guo Pei’s design, she also became the butt of the joke online.
Like anything that is great in the world, the internet loves to humble the moment with some banter. Back in 2015,when memes were rife, people took to Twitter (now X) to take the mickey out of the dress.
Many noticed how wonderful Rihanna looked, but they also noticed how the bottom of the train had an uncanny resemblance to some of our favourite foods.
The edits of Rihanna’s Met Gala outfit quickly rolled in, with people editing pizza toppings onto the yellow numbers. Others compared it to an omelette, and Brits felt like the gown looked like a Greggs Steak Bake.
Where is Rihanna’s Met Gala dress now?
But, what happened to Rihanna’s Met Gala dress? Does the popstar keep the massive dress in her wardrobe at home or has it been returned to Guo Pei?
Well, it’s actually on show with a bunch of other haute couture designs from Guo Pei – who is seen as China’s leading couture artist. The exhibition ‘Fashioning Imagination’, featuring the dress Rihanna wore, is currently open to the public at the M+ art and design museum.
That means you can gawk at the delicate design, or steak bake, in real life. It’s almost like you’ll be up close and personal with Rihanna herself, although the dress is now placed on a mannequin.
However, you’ll have to travel far if you want to see ‘The Yellow Queen’ in person as the exhibition is in Kowloon, Hong Kong.
If you’re one for fashion and celebs, then it might be worth the visit.
