Hugh Grant was filmed appearing to fall asleep in the Royal Box at Wimbledon, with fans and BBC commentators taking to social media to share their thoughts on the incident
Hugh Grant has unexpectedly stolen the limelight at Wimbledon after he was caught on camera seemingly dozing off in the Royal Box during one of the tournament’s most eagerly awaited matches.
The Love Actually actor was seen with his head bowed and eyes shut during the men’s quarter-final between Novak Djokovic and Flavio Cobolli on Wednesday. The moment was broadcast live by BBC cameras, just moments after Grant, 64, had been spotted engaging in friendly conversation with Queen Camilla in the exclusive Centre Court seating area.
Grant arrived at the All England Club with his wife, Anna Eberstein, and the pair seemed to be in high spirits – smiling and laughing as they socialised with other guests and stood to greet the Queen.
However, as the match heated up and temperatures soared to 26 degrees, the actor was filmed slumped in his seat donning sunglasses, which sparked a wave of online reactions.
BBC Sport later posted the clip on X (formerly Twitter), humorously captioning it: “It’s all got a bit too much for Hugh Grant,” accompanied by laughing and sleeping emojis. The post quickly went viral and sparked lively discussion among tennis enthusiasts, reports the Mirror.
Some social media users were less than amused, accusing Grant of showing disrespect. One commented: “COBOLLI I think HUGH GRANT owes you a massive apology for being asleep in your tie breaker situation, totally disrespectful.”
One disgruntled viewer vented: “Hugh Grant is sleeping through the first set tie break! T**ts like him and some other ‘celebs’ who get privileged tickets for #Wimbledon2025 don’t deserve them! ! !”.
Yet, not all spectators were as irate. Many found amusement in the actor’s brief snooze.
One fan quipped: “Hugh Grant asleep in the Royal Box is the best thing I’ve seen at #WIMBLEDON this year! ! I love this man! !”
Another chimed in with: “Hugh Grant flat out kipping at Wimbledon is the best thing I’ve seen today.”
The day was graced by a host of celebrities basking in the sunshine. Ted Lasso actress Hannah Waddingham turned heads in a vibrant alice + olivia dress, while Emily Atack exuded elegance in a monochrome gown, enjoying a Pimm’s in the stands.
Comedian Jack Whitehall and his fiancée Roxy Horner were also in attendance, spotted in the Vodafone Lounge with Whitehall’s parents before settling into their seats.
Other guests included former Prime Minister Sir John Major and influencer GK Barry, who sported a chic black and white tweed ensemble.
Grant has yet to comment on the incident, but his mid-match nap has undeniably become one of the most buzzed-about moments of Wimbledon this year.
