Zoe Ball has officially said goodbye to BBC Radio 2 as she welled up on her final show, bidding her listeners farewell – but this might not be the last time we see Zoe
Zoe Ball has bid an emotional farewell to her BBC Radio 2 show in a heartbreaking final instalment. The presenter sobbed as she said goodbye to her listeners.
Zoe, 55, announced back at the start of December that she would be leaving her BBC show. The final episode of the show aired today (December 20), and it was clear that Zoe was emotional as she turned her back on her beloved Saturday show.
As she headed into work early this morning, she was greeted by fans who wished her well on her next projects. It comes just over a year after Zoe stepped down from her other BBC Radio show, making herself a staple on the nation’s airwaves.
According to the Sun, Zoe had been one of the longest-serving presenters on the BBC station, having hosted her weekday show for more than six years. As her final show got underway, comedian Romesh Ranganathan opened the show, as it got underway at 1pm.
In a heartfelt tribute to the host, Weakest Link frontman Romesh said Zoe leaving the show was akin to a “death in the family”, before inundating her with messages of love and support from listeners and fans alike. Handing over to Zoe, Romesh wept: “It’s your last show! I’m gonna miss seeing you every Saturday.”
When asked how she was feeling at the prospect of her last show, Zoe insisted: “It’s my last Saturday show. I’m feeling like everybody else is feeling at this time of year.
“Don’t worry I won’t be a stranger,” she added. As the show got underway, Romesh also addressed one very important point as rumours continue to swirl that Zoe could be headed for the ballroom next year.
“Is it true you’re leaving your Saturday show because of…” Romesh said, signalling and gesturing that it could be down to rumours Zoe could replace Claudia Winkleman and Tess Daly in presenting Strictly. But trying to remain coy, Romesh hid the true meaning, adding “Sally on traffic, it’s that, let’s put that down now.”
Seeing the hilarity of the secret conversation, Zoe replied: “Sally and I have been in love with each other for a long time. And we’ve decided we can’t possibly work in the same building anymore because the magnetism is too much.”
The chat came after Zoe was speculated to be one of ten presenters who were approached to host the BBC stalwart after Tess and Claudia announced they would be leaving the show after tonight’s live final. The ten presenters are said to be going through chemistry tests, with some being put through their paces to find the best hosts for the show.
Zoe’s potential appearance on Strictly has sparked major excitement that television domination could be already on the cards for Zoe. One user said they were eagerly awaiting the news that she will in fact make it on the show for her next project.
“I think they’d be mad not to go for her,” they said of Zoe’s potential new gig. “Been on and loves the show, plus presented It Takes Two; she’s a safe pair of hands.”
