Catherine Tate’s new pantomime Sleeping Beauty has received furious reviews from unsuspecting families, many of which have taken to social media to urge parents not to bring their children
Catherine Tate fans have branded her Christmas pantomime a “smutfest” and some have even stormed out mid-way.
The comedian’s fans have reportedly been paying upwards of £220 to see her live at London’s Palladium Theatre, which quickly became the fastest-selling pantomime ever at the iconic venue.
Starring alongside Catherine is Celebrity Big Brother star Julian Clary, Coronation Street’s Nigel Havers and America’s Got Talent’s Paul Zerdin.
Sleeping Beauty is being shown at 2:30pm and 7:30pm and the Palladium’s website has issued a “parental discretion” warning due to the show’s rude adult jokes, but this hasn’t helped.
Attendees are raging and have flooded social media with complaints, with one TripAdvisor review simply reading “insulting”.
Someone else wrote: “Another dreadful Panto this year, or should I say weak variety show. Having seen several over the past 10 years, it really does begin to appear that the more £££ they make, the worse it gets.”
“It’s embarrassing how much £££ is spent on so little story, talent and innuendo. Nothing clever about it anymore and their attitude of ‘it doesn’t matter because the audience will be drunk’ and the no plot gag is just tedious and rather insulting to the thousands who save up all year to attend.”
“The audience reaction this week was clearly muted, and no standing ovation at the end. If I were a creative on the show, especially costume, I’d be furious as some ensemble costumes (expensive ones) are only seen for seconds. The repeated use of same ‘acts’ and actors is also tedious, especially when they don’t have new material.”
Another furious punter praised the “fabulous set, wonderful costumes and magnificent special effects” but slammed the “adult style” which left them feeling “cheated out of a traditional panto”.
“Unfortunately it was pretty much a ‘smut fest’. Very disappointing. Won’t be going again. Please don’t bring your children to this.” One parent said the “adult-themed references” left their daughter feeling “uncomfortable,” so the family “decided to leave early”.
They fumed: “If the show intends to include mature humour, it would be helpful for the age guidance to reflect that more accurately so families can make an informed choice.”
