The acclaimed stage and screen actress, 69, who is an ambassador for Alzheimer’s Society, lost her mum Jean to the disease in 2010, aged 87
Lesley Manville has made a Christmas plea for donations to support those suffering from dementia over the festive season.
The acclaimed stage and screen actress, 69, who is an ambassador for Alzheimer’s Society, lost her mum Jean to the disease in 2010, aged 87.
She said: “ Christmas is meant to be the most wonderful time of the year. But for nearly one million people living with dementia, the bright lights, busy homes, and changes in routine can feel overwhelming.
“I know this all too well. My lovely mum Jean was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2006.
“She had been active and independent, but her decline was rapid and devastating. By that first Christmas after her diagnosis, everything had changed – our family traditions felt unfamiliar, and the joy of the season was overshadowed by confusion and heartbreak.
“Mum sadly died in 2010, but I’ll never forget how isolating those years were. Dementia doesn’t stop for Christmas. It can be isolating and heartbreaking for people living with dementia and their loved ones.
“Christmas is a time when people come together as a family, and that should be no different for families affected by dementia. This Christmas, please consider donating to Alzheimer’s Society’s ‘Reimagine Christmas’ appeal.
“Your support could help a family affected by dementia feel a little less alone.”
