Piers Morgan and Holly Willoughby voted UK's most loved celebs during pandemic

Holly Willoughby and Piers Morgan are some of the names topping the list of the UK’s most loved celebs this year, as the nation continues to battle against the coronavirus pandemic.

The public voted for Britain’s best “wing men and women,” according to supermarket giant Aldi, deciding on the celebs who helped to get us through the highs and lows of 2020.

GMB star Piers, 55, landed in seventh place in the new survey, praised for becoming the “nation’s mouthpiece”.

Honouring the accolade, the retailer said: “At seventh place, Piers’ barrage of tweets to government ministers and through his GMB platform, he became the mouthpiece for many of the nation’s frustrations during this extraordinary period.”

Presenting This Morning throughout the lockdown, Holly, 39, and her co-star Phillip Schofield have ranked in sixth and eighth place respectively in the poll.

The presenting duo have worked tirelessly to combat loneliness throughout the pandemic, as well as hosting uplifting giveaways and fashioning a contact-free plastic curtain to hug safely on the show.

“Their wingman attitude saw them defy the doom and gloom; from hugging through their own socially distant plastic curtain, to inuendo laughing fits, their daily giggles brought to life the power of friendship and light-hearted fun through more serious times,” the retailer said.

Piers, Phil and Holly aren’t the only ITV stars to make the top-ten list – money expert Martin Lewis lands in fourth place, after months spent dishing out emergency financial advice amidst record job losses.

Sir David Attenborough was awarded first place in the survey, with his lifelong campaign to save the planet and explore the beauty of the globe.

Captain Tom Moore, who pledged to walk 100 laps of his garden before his 100th birthday, ranked in second place, having brought the nation to tears back in April.

Fitness guru Joe Wicks came in third, after his vow to keep the nation fit in lockdown with daily workout videos.

Next up, footballer Marcus Rashford lands in fifth place, whose inspirational campaign to get free school lunches for students in need during the summer holidays proved successful.

Diving into the sentiment behind the survey, Aldi said: “The untold events of 2020 have seen the UK come together with an abundance of community spirit.

“Three quarters of respondents said they felt these wingmen celebrities embodied the quintessentially British sentiment of ‘keep calm and carry on’.”
