Girls Aloud’s Sarah Harding opens up on how 'tough' Coronation Street gig was

Pop star and former Girls Aloud band member Sarah Harding is most well-known for her incredible singing voice, so fans would be forgiven for forgetting she also dabbled in acting.

The 39-year-old star had a role on the longest-running show ever, the stalwart northern soap Coronation Street.

Sarah appeared on the cobbles in 2015, when she had a brief stint as Robert Preston’s wife Joni.

But the starry lights of the ITV soap were more difficult than expected it seems, as Sarah called the job a “real tough gig”.

In her new book Hear Me Out, the singer explained: “It’s such an iconic show, an institution, and when you’re going on as a short-term character, it’s hard to get into your stride.

“That was a real tough gig for me because it was like I was playing a part that wasn’t a million miles away from the real me.”

Sarah admitted that while she thoughts fans would imagine playing yourself in a role would be “easy”, it was the complete opposite for her.

In fact, she said she would have found it much more comfortable playing a role very far away from her true personality.

Sarah went on to say that even small details like having a different accent or a wig would have helped.

What’s more, the actress noted that the “fast pace” of working on a soap was a very difficult learning curve, and she felt she’d been thrown in “at the deep end” on Corrie.

“In fact, my very first day on set was pretty much all screaming, crying and slapping,” the star penned in her book. “Still, I enjoyed working with Kate Ford, who played Tracy; she’s a lovely girl and we ended up having a proper giggle together.”

But it seemed the biggest challenge for the former girl band member was actually the fact she’s a fan of the soap.

She recalled how even having lots of pages of dialogue on her film Bad Day wasn’t as intense as a couple of lines in a scene with Rita Sullivan.

“My knees turned to jelly,” Sarah added.
