Tom Cruise returns all 3 Golden Globes after boycott over 'lack of diversity'

Tom Cruise has reportedly returned his three Golden Globe awards.

The Hollywood star has joined a growing list of celebrities and companies who are boycotting the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) amid the outcry for its failure to reform its lack of diversity.

The HFPA is a non-profit organization of journalists and photographers who report on the entertainment industry and interests in the US media.

But Hollywood A-lister Cruise has given his trio of awards back according to Deadline.

The iconic 58-year-old actor scooped his first Golden Globe in 1990 for his star performance in the movie Born on the Fourth of July.

And after that Best Actor award, Tom won another Best Actor gong for his role in Jerry Maguire in 1997.

A third Golden Globe followed in 2000 for a fine Best Supporting Actor in Magnolia.

But despite his unprecedented success in the film industry, the Hollywood heavyweight is the latest in a long list of big-name actors and companies including Netflix, Amazon and NBC who are protesting against the HFPA.

NBC have already revealed they will not air the Golden Globes next year, but have admitted they would air the awards show in 2023 providing diversity changes have been made.

And a revealing statement, NBC have stressed the HFPA should be committed to diversity reform.

“Change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right,” read the NBC statement.

“As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organisation executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”

The Los Angeles Times newspaper conducted an investigative report into the HPFA’s diversity record which, amazingly, has no black members amongst it’s approximate 90 voting members.

The HFPA have said they will reform following the outcry, but streaming giant Netflix cast doubt on its future involvement with the company going forward.

“We don’t believe these proposed new policies – particularly around the size and speed of membership growth – will tackle the HFPA’s systemic diversity and inclusion challenges, or the lack of clear standards for how your members should operate,” stressed Netflix co-chief executive Ted Sarandos in an open letter to the group.

Tom is known for hit movies, including Mission Impossible

Movie giant Warner Bros revealed it would cease holding screenings and other events for the HFPA until it made more substantial changes.

“For far too long, demands for perks, special favours and unprofessional requests have been made to our teams and to others across the industry,” said WarnerMedia executives, in an open letter of their own.

“We regret that as an industry, we have complained, but largely tolerated this behaviour until now.”
