Anne-Marie likes herself 'for the first time' after seeking therapy

Anne-Marie was hit with a complete stop in her usual career, like many other performers, with the wake of Covid-19 – but after being forced to put her schedule on hold, she’s been able to take time for herself.

The 30-year-old has openly talked about attending therapy and explained that during 2020, she has been working on herself which has allowed her to become even more excited for her return to work.

Speaking to Daily Star Online, she said: “Before 2020 I was so wrapped up in everything and I was such an anxious person, so touring was amazing but stressful.

“Now that I have gone through it and seen a therapist, the excitement has overtaken the nerves. I’ve really been working on myself.”

She explained how she never took a break, but the halt in her schedule saw her take a moment to deal with herself, Anne-Marie added: “It gave me a chance to stop and I was able to see a therapist and it unravelled a lot.

“I now like myself for the first time, which is something that should be normal. I’ve now got that perspective of treating myself nicely and being kind to myself which has changed my whole perception with life.”

Following a year of reflection, Anne-Marie has also decided to name her new album Therapy, but prior to that decision, she was struggling to find the inspiration.

She said: “I struggled with what I wanted to say. I always want to make my music quite real and about life, so it was strange to write without a meaning.

“When we figured out it was going to be called therapy, it all slotted into place – some of these songs are from like three years ago, because I could put every emotion on it.”

Anne-Marie will be back touring in May next year and although there are some added nerves, she said that announcing the tour was good in itself.

In the meantime, she’s had some odd moments with recording her music, with one track needing to be done from the comfort of her own living room.

Working with O2 on the Here Comes Brighter campaign, Anne-Marie’s cover of Ooh Child was recorded at home, but she loved that different aspect.

She said: “The campaign was something that was all about bringing home our future, shows and everything else, I knew I wanted to do it. It felt right to be involved with something like that.

“It’s definitely personal, but I think the song was perfect for it. It’s emotional, happy, promising, I felt emotional while doing it.”

Anne-Marie has felt the raw emotion from the campaign like many other performers, with her upcoming tour being one of the first shows she would have been able to do from early 2020.

Although her tour isn’t until May 2022, she’s hopeful she will be back on the stage soon with some performances over the next few months.
