EastEnders’ new arrival is making a surprise return to the hit soap and is sure to add to the drama on Albert Square.
Actress Martha Cope will be joining the Walford cast as Sandy Gibson, the troubled mother of Dotty Cotton.
Cope, who has featured in TV dramas like Doctors and Holby City will make her debut in the Square in episodes set to air in autumn on the BBC.
Sandy’s surprise arrival will cause friction with her estranged daughter who is played by Milly Zero.
She had a short-lived relationship with the infamous Nick Cotton (John Altman) due to past alcohol problems and fell pregnant with Dotty.
She Eventually told Nick about their daughter while he was behind bars and he took over custody when he was released.
He lied to Dotty and told her Sandy had died in a car crash.
Sandy’s last appearance on the Square was when Dot Cotton – played by icon June Brown – helped reunite the mother and daughter.
At the time the character was played by Caroline Pegg in 2010.
Since Dotty returned to the soap two years ago (2019), Sandy has stayed away – until now.
Cope, who has starred in Family Affairs and Doctor Who previously, said: “I have watched EastEnders since it began and I’m beyond excited to join such an iconic show and having a great time playing Sandy.”
Jon Sen, executive producer of EastEnders, said: “Martha is a brilliant addition to our cast – we’re excited to welcome her to Walford. To say Sandy has a chequered past is an understatement and it’s no secret that Dotty’s upbringing was marred by her parents.
“Sandy’s arrival catches Dotty off guard and she’ll be forced to confront everything she’s tried to leave behind.”
Sandy isn’t the only character to make a debut, with Janine Butcher’s daughter, Scarlett, being introduced in a recent episode.
EastEnders fans were excited to see Scarlett, who appeared as Tommy Moon’s mysterious online friend, but Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) was horrified.
Tommy thinks Scarlett is his cousin but is actually his half-sister of whom he pleaded with Kat to take out of foster care.
Viewers are convinced Scarlett appearing has come amid an imminent return of the infamous Janine.
EastEnders airs on BBC One.
