Inside Trainspotting cast now – from Angelina Jolie marriage to Harry Potter stint

Exposing the dark underbelly of life as a heroin addict in a poverty-stricken pocket of Edinburgh doesn’t sound like typical musical fodder -but Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh is not your ordinary writer.

The creator of the iconic novel, which was turned into a big screen hit directed by Danny Boyle in 1996, has penned 14 songs for a West End version as we reported yesterday.

It’s been 25 years since the cast appeared on the big screen for the classic movie.

In 2017 the main cast reunited for sequel T2 Trainspotting but what else have the stars of the Oscar-nominated film been up to? KIM CARR finds out.

Ewan McGregor

After his superb portrayal of junkie Mark Renton, Ewan starred in musical Moulin Rouge! alongside Nicole Kidman, before playing Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

He landed an OBE in 2013 and in 2016 swapped his passport for US citizenship.

Ewan, 50, split from wife Eve Mavrakis after meeting actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead on the set of Fargo. They now have a son and he has four daughters with his ex.

This year Ewan won acclaim for his turn as the title character, American fashion designer Halston, in the Netflix mini-series.

Jonny Lee Miller

He was Sick Boy in Trainspotting but there’s nothing vomit-inducing about the career that Jonny carved out for himself after the black comedy’s success.

He starred in Mansfield Park and The Flying Scotsman and also won an Olivier Award for his theatre stint in Frankenstein.

But today he’s probably best known as a modern-day Sherlock Holmes in US show Elementary. He has been married twice – once to Angelina Jolie – and has a son with ex Michele Hicks.

Like Ewan, the 49-year-old is now an American citizen. His latest project, sci-fi thriller Settlers, came out in July.

Robert Carlyle

Glasgow-born Robert’s turns as psychopathic Francis Begbie were unforgettable and he went on to win a BAFTA for his role as redundant steelworker-turned-stripper Gaz Schofield in The Full Monty

Robert, 60, also played Bond villain Renard in 1999’s The World Is Not Enough.

He has recently been on screen as PM Robert Sutherland in Sky’s Cobra and paid tribute to murdered MP Sir David Amess after episodes were pulled in the wake of the tragedy.

Robert, who was awarded an OBE in 1999, is married to make-up artist Anastasia Shirley and has three kids.

Kelly MacDonald

Despite having no previous acting experience, Kelly was cast as Renton’s underage lover while working as a barmaid.

A gig in the film Gosford Park brought Kelly to the attention of Hollywood and she has since starred in a Boardwalk Empire five-
season stint, which resulted in two Golden Globe nominations.

Kelly 45, also kept busy with a part in Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2 while last year she played bent copper DCI Joanne Davidson in Line Of Duty.

Kelly has two sons with ex-husband and Travis bassist Dougie Payne.

Ewen Bremner

After playing Daniel “Spud” Murphy, Edinburgh-born Ewen switched over to Renton in a 1994 stage version of Trainspotting.

Returning to movies, he played a thug in Guy Ritchie’s Snatch, had supporting roles in blockbusters Wonder Woman, Black Hawk Down and Pearl Harbor, then played a doctor in Alien Vs Predator.

This year Ewen took on the part of Creation Records founder Alan McGee, the man who launched Oasis, in the biopic Creation Stories.

The 50-year-old has a daughter with actress Marcia Rose, who he met on the set of short film Skin.

Kevin McKidd

America came calling for Elgin-born Kevin after he played Tommy Mackenzie in Trainspotting, with a breakthrough part in Grey’s Anatomy.

The 48-year-old actor was also Count Vronsky in the BBC mini-series Anna Karenina and spent two years starring in the historical drama Rome.

Last year he had a bit part in TV show Room 104 while Kevin, also now a US citizen, has been married twice and has four kids.

Shirley Henderson

Shirley has appeared in many films, including Harry Potter as Moaning Myrtle

Known to the Trainspotting faithful as Gail, Bridget Jones fans will recognise Shirley as the singleton title character’s best pal Jude in the films.

She was also ghostly schoolgirl Moaning Myrtle from the Harry Potter movies.

Last year she played Saucy Nancy in the reboot of Worzel Gummidge. The private star, 55, never comments on her love life.

James Cosmo

James Cosmo famously appeared in the film

Before he was Renton’s dad, James was famous for another Scottish hit – Braveheart.

But James later showed a softer side as Father Christmas in The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe.

In 2017 he came fourth in Celebrity Big Brother and he played Jeor Mormont in Game Of Thrones.

This year he took a different turn in Indian thriller Jagame Thanthiram. James, 74, is married with two kids.
