Naga Munchetty sparks BBC Breakfast fury after 'loaded' Downing Street party interview

Naga Munchetty came under fire when viewers accused her of ‘trying to defend MPs’ when she interviewed Labour MP Chris Bryant, while another viewer said that the segment didn’t make her ‘look her best’.

Hosting the popular BBC Breakfast show with regular Charlie Stayt on Saturday, December 18, the pair spoke to the Labour MP and asked his thoughts about the investigations into the alleged lockdown rule-breaking Downing Street Christmas parties from 2020.

The MP was adamant that the police should be investigating the alleged parties, but Naga probed Chris, asking: “What would you expect the police to do? Are you in favour of retrospective punishment?

“What sort of punishments would you expect to be applied?” She questioned.

The politician replied: “I don’t understand this concept of police not investigating things retrospectively.

“I thought they could only investigate things retrospectively. Surely they can only investigate things that have already been done?

“There are people that are still being prosecuted, being taken through the courts and getting substantial fines for doing, as I understand it, precisely what went on in Downing Street.

Continuing: “So, I don’t understand this argument that the police shouldn’t be able to investigate retrospectively, that is the nature of investigation.”

Naga replied: “I suppose the argument is about the length of time between what happened and what’s being investigated.”

To which Chris Bryant slammed: “As I say, there are people whose cases are still being taken through the courts now for events that happened in December and October of last year.

“So, yes, I believe that the police… I don’t think there’s any statute of limitations saying ‘No, sorry we’re not going to investigate something just because it happened a year ago’.

The MP then said: “I think the police should be investigating full.”

Some viewers took to Twitter to discuss the aftermath of the show, with some people accusing Naga of defending the MPs who broke lockdown rules.

One wrote: “Why is Naga furthering the notion that police shouldn’t investigate things after they have happened? #BBCBreakfast.”

A second penned: ““Naga wants a Christmas Card from Boris #BBCBreakfast.”

Another took to the app to say: “Naga your interview of Chris Bryant really isn’t making you look your best.”

While someone else said: “Why is Naga trying so hard to defend the MPs? Of course police investigate in retrospect. They aren’t there partying with them are they?”

And a fan of Naga even said: “As a Naga fan I found the tone of that interview with @TVNaga01 very odd. It literally felt as though she’d actually planned it over breakfast with Boris. Very loaded.”

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
