Maura Higgins calls out Love Island star as she defends Molly-Mae Hague amid backlash

Maura Higgins slammed fellow Love Island star Shaughna Phillips – after Molly-Mae Hague faced a furious backlash for ‘tone deaf’ comments on a recent podcast.

Higgins spoke out in defence of her best friend Molly after Molly sparked backlash for comments she made about success on Stephen Bartlett’s Diary Of A CEO podcast.

Molly was branded “tone deaf” for making comments such as that everyone has the “same 24 hours in a day” – with fuming social media users claiming she hadn’t addressed how financially ‘privileged’ she was.

Hague had insisted that people can achieve anything they want in life if they work hard enough to get it.

Love Island 2020 star Shaughna Phillips took to Twitter and criticised Molly for making a “stupid” comment – adding that she doesn’t have a lot of “life” experience.

Shaughna wrote: “Molly Mae is young, who’s had a lot of success really quickly, and not a lot of “life”. So I can understand why she holds those views.

“We all say things when we’re younger and look back and think “well that was stupid” lol. No shade, I wanna live in her bubble”

The Celebs Go Dating alum had previously tweeted: “If there’s one thing about me, you will never see me brag about things I have, or be flashy, or flaunt my earnings.

“I’m VERY aware I’ve had an absolute touch in life, and it’s not from hard work. What I do now is not hard work and that will never be lost on me.”

However, Irish Love Island star Maura fired back at Shaughna, writing: “Surely you know as someone in this industry how lonely and scary it can be when the whole internet is slamming you.

“Your entitled to your opinion yes but I’m really surprised you commenting on this at all.”

Shaughna was quick to reply, “100%! That’s why I tweeted this in her defence. She’s young and successful, it’s not her fault she has those views. Like I said, no shade, just jel lol.”

Molly is the creative director of PrettyLittleThing – and she boasts 6.3 million Instagram followers.

On the podcast, she said: “You’re given one life and it’s down to you what you do with it. You can literally go in any direction.

“When I’ve spoken about that in the past I have been slammed a little bit, with people saying ‘it’s easy for you to say that because you’ve not grown up in poverty, so for you to sit there and say we all have the same 24 hours in a day is not correct.

“But, technically, what I’m saying is correct. We do,”

She went on: “I understand we all have different backgrounds and we’re all raised in different ways and we do have different financial situations, but I think if you want something enough you can achieve it.

“It just depends on what lengths you want to go to get where you want to be in the future. And I’ll go to any length.”

Molly added: “I’ve worked my absolute a**e off to get where I am now”.

Many fans on Twitter were outraged at the comments, with many saying how out of touch her comments were given her wealthy position.

One wrote: “i like molly mae but a lot of the things she said in that podcast were so tone deaf”

A second said:” She literally just went on a TV dating show and got brand deals, I’m not sure she ‘worked here a**e off'”

Another wrote: “I respect Molly Mae for making the most of her opportunity & grabbing it with both hands, but I DESPAIR at the quote about everyone having the same time in a day as Beyoncé. The reality is that social inequality means there’ll never be an even playing field”
