Betty White hailed 'true icon' and 'beauty queen' as A-listers remember actress

President Joe Biden and Hollywood celebrities have paid tribute to Betty White as they celebrate her life on TV special.

On the NBC special, Celebrating Betty White: America’s Golden Girl, friends and co-stars paid tribute to the late Betty White who died on New Year’s Eve.

The programme reflected on the legendary actress’s career and the impact she had on the world.

The 46th President of the United States shared a heartfelt message in tribute to the 99-year-old, US publication People reports.

President Biden said: “Betty White was an American treasure. An icon and a pioneer. She challenged conventions. With every laugh and smile she opened our hearts.”

The 79-year-old continued: “But above all, she moved our souls, and the soul of our nation. What a gift we’ll always treasure. God bless you, Betty. We all love you.”

The one night special aired on Monday also included Drew Barrymore, Valerie Bertinelli, Cher, Bryan Cranston, Ted Danson, Ellen DeGeneres, Jimmy Fallon, Tina Fey, Ana Gasteyer, Goldie Hawn, Vicki Lawrence, Jane Leeves, Jay Leno, Anthony Mackie, Wendie Malick, Joel McHale, Tracy Morgan, Jean Smart and Mary Steenburgen.

The hour-long show featured several hilarious and heart warming clips from her iconic career with the stars reflecting on their memories with Betty.

Joel McHale, who starred with Betty in 2010 on the show “Community” pointed out how “unprecedented” it was for White to star in hit sitcoms in three different decades: “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “The Golden Girls” and “Hot in Cleveland.”

Betty’s co-star Ryan Reynolds in The Proposal was seen in a behind-the-scenes clip as she mistook him on the 2009 rom-com set.

She can be heard calling Ryan “Bryan” while asking for him to get her a cup of coffee.

He corrected her: “No, my name’s Ryan, we’ve been working together for weeks.”

With a serious look on her face, she replied: “When Betty White says she wants a cup of coffee, you get her a (bleeped) cup of coffee.”

According to a death certificate obtained by People, Betty died six days after suffering a stroke.

Singer Cher remembered when she first saw Betty at the age of 7 on the TV sitcom “Life with Elizabeth.”

She gushed: “I came upon this face. It was really sweet. She looked like a beauty queen. It had big dimples and I think that was the beginning of my love affair with Betty White.”

In 1977, the iconic actress appeared as a guest star on the Believe singers show, The Sonny & Cher Show which gave Cher the chance to confess her love for her.

Betty White died on New Years Eve at the age of 99

Cher teased a video prior to the celebration show performing Thank You for Being a Friend, which is the opening number from Betty’s sit-com The Golden Girls.

Singing from the same stage where the icon filmed the beloved show each week as her character Rose, Cher explained how she “stood out.”

She explained: “She was a true American icon but what really stood out about her is that she was exactly who we all want in a friend–warm, caring, authentic and always fun.”
