Grand Designs guest emotional as dad dies after cancer battle before final build

Grand Designs made for emotional viewing on Saturday afternoon after a homeowner’s father died before the final build on the Kevin Mcloud show.

Dan and Nina had hopes of building a large eco-friendly family home in Chichester, West Sussex, but they were met with many struggles along the way.

Father-of-two Dan worked tirelessly on the new home and wanted to make sure his unwell dad was able to see the final project.

However, Dan’s father passed away during the beginning stages of construction following his battle with leukemia.

Speaking about his father’s death, Dan said: “The first time he acknowledged to me that he thought he was on his way out was when he said ‘I’m not going to be able to see the finished project’, which was about a month before he died.

“Which was kind of a sad moment.”

He continued: “He was so proud of me for what I was doing,” he explained while adding: “But I just got to push forward and do the project really well.”

But this wasn’t the only problem Dan and Nina faced during their house building journey.

The married couple also got into financial issues when they realised they couldn’t afford to pay for materials for their home.

Dan and Nina encountered many setbacks

Nina and Dan planned to sell their home in London in order to pay for their new house however the buyers who were supposed to purchase their city home fell through.

They then had to wait several months for a new buyer which certainly halted their plans.

In addition to this, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the couple were forced to put things on hold yet again.

Despite all the complications and challenges, they did eventually manage to finish their project and create the family home of their dreams which included a large pond.

When asked by presenter Kevin what he thinks his father would feel about the home, Dan said: “The underlining principle of what we tried to create, I think he would have become proud of me seeing that I made a connection with the landscape.

“It makes the house so much more special having invested in the pond, I think that’s at the essence of what he would be most proud of.

Nina chimed: “I agree.”
