Piers Morgan has shocked people by jumping to the defence of author J.K. Rowling, claiming she has been treated “despicably” for airing her views recently.
J.K. whose real name is Joanne has been heavily criticised in recent years following comments she made regarding gender identity and the transgender community.
The 56-year-old has said she “respects every trans person’s right to live in a way that feels comfortable to them” but added it is not “hateful” for her to say her life has been shaped by “being female”.
Despite their previous feuds, former Good Morning Britain anchor Piers has leapt to her defence, days after Russian president, Vladimir Putin compared himself to the Harry Potter author.
In his column for The Sun, Piers, 56, said he “respects” trans individuals to be called by their preferred pronoun, adding he “unequivocally” supports their rights to equality.
He said: “Nobody would go through the lengthy physical and emotional ordeal of transitioning if they didn’t genuinely believe they were trapped in the wrong body.”
But Piers added he does not agree with the discussions surrounding the community, saying “You can have all the gender identities you like, however preposterous as many of them are, but what you can’t do is deny the reality of biological sex.”
He later added that he “agrees” that “basic facts of biology are irrefutable”.
Throwing support behind J.K, he said should anybody attempt to defend women’s rights or “state simple biological facts”, they should be prepared to be cancelled.
The broadcaster added: “They will also try to destroy your career and your life, all whilst masquerading under the laughably inappropriate #BeKind hashtag moniker.
“The worst victim of this has been Harry Potter author JK Rowling, who had the unfortunate honour of being name-checked by Vladimir Putin this week as he tried to equate what she’s been through to the sanctions against Russia for invading Ukraine.”
Putin, who last month launched an illegal invasion of Ukraine claimed he was now a victim of cancel culture.
During a speech broadcast to the nation, he said: “They cancelled Joanne Rowling recently, the children’s author, her books are published all over the world – just because she didn’t satisfy the demands of gender rights.
“They are now trying to cancel our country, I’m talking about the progressive discrimination of everything to do with Russia.”
