Countdown's Nick Hewer got so drunk filming TV show co-star thought he'd died

Countdown’s former host Nick Hewer got “D.R.U.N.K.” on whisky while filming a TV show.

He joined a celebrity gang on a religious trek from Ireland to Scotland for BBC Two’s Pilgrimage.

However one night when they had to bed down in sleeping bags in a basic shelter, he hit the booze.

Co-star and comic Shazia Mirza claims he got so tipsy he fell over and she thought he had killed himself.

She said: “One night Nick was drunk and I had to rescue him off the floor. I thought he had died.”

In his defence Nick says: ‘‘I was p***ed but not completely drunk and if you are 77 and standing on an air mattress in the dark half p***ed and your foot gets caught in the sleeping bag and you fall and hit the floor.. let’s just say I slipped on the slopes of Glenfiddich.’’

The show starts on BBC Two on Friday April 8.

Nick has been taken over by former The Weakest Link host Anne Robinson on Countdown following his departure from the Channel 4 show.

When asked if Nick had approached her personally to offer some advice, Anne told Daily Star and other press: “No, through the producer he very kindly said he was available but, this isn’t meant to be rude, I thought it was information I could do nothing with.

“It would be like telling Gary Lineker how to do Match of the Day. We’re just two completely different people.

“I also didn’t want to hear what was difficult and what he found tiring. All the jobs I’ve done I’ve never gone back to the previous person and asked how.”

She added: “There’s a long range of people in various jobs that I took over from, except from Weakest Link which I created the character.”

Countdown was the first programme to broadcast on Channel 4, when the channel launched 39 years ago on November 1982, making it one of the longest running quiz shows in the world.

Anne is joined on the show by fan-favourite Rachel Riley for the numbers, and beloved wordsmith Susie Dent in Dictionary Corner.

Countdown airs weekdays on Channel 4 at 2.10pm
