Prince Harry claims he wasn't 'able to show emotion' after Diana's death

Prince Harry has recalled shaking the “wet hands” of mourners ahead of Diana, Princess of Wales’ state funeral.

The Duke of Sussex has spoken candidly to his friend and broadcaster Tom Bradby in a landmark interview ahead of the release of his upcoming memoir, Spare.

Harry, 38, has previously explained he didn’t understand why people across the globe were heartbroken following the death of his mum in 1997.

In a new clip from his interview, the dad-of-two has suggested that he and his older brother Prince William were unable to show any signs of emotion as they prepared to bury their late mother.

Speaking to Tom, he said: “Everyone knows where they were and what they were doing the night my mother died.”

He goes on to say: “I cried once, at the burial, and you know I go into detail about how strange it was and how actually there was some guilt that I felt, and I think William felt as well, by walking around the outside of Kensington Palace.

“There were 50,000 bouquets of flowers to our mother and there we were shaking people’s hands, smiling.

“I’ve seen the videos, right, I looked back over it all and the wet hands that we were shaking, we couldn’t understand why their hands were wet, but it was all the tears that they were wiping away.”

In what appeared to be a swipe at royal protocol, the Duke fumes: “Everyone thought and felt like they knew our mum, and the two closest people to her, the two most loved people by her, were unable to show any emotion in that moment.”

This is just the latest in a string of bombshells released ahead of the ITV interview airing, with Harry also opening up about a physical altercation with Prince William.

Discussing the fight in his memoir, Harry recalls: “He grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and he knocked me to the floor.”

He went on to tell Tom: “What was different here was the level of frustration, and I talk about the red mist that I had for so many years, and I saw this red mist in him.

“He wanted me to hit him back, but I chose not to.”

In the interview, Harry discusses his substance abuse, admitting he took cocaine, marijuana as well as magic mushrooms.

While he acknowledges that this may have shocked people, he explained it was “important to acknowledge”.
