Boogie Nights was a sex-crammed story about a lad with a 13-inch penis – not your average Hollywood plotline.
The film was released 25 years ago and focussed on the porn industry, bringing the topic into the mainstream in the most full-frontal way they could think of.
Orgies, drug use, and oral sex were all shown along with Austin Powers actress Heather Graham as she skated around naked, later pummelling a man’s head with those same roller skates.

A lot of the movie was actually inspired by real life porn stars too – with actor Mark Wahlberg’s lead character, Dirk Diggler, based on the legendary Jon Holmes, whose own penis measured a mammoth 12 and half inches.
The film was loved by many upon its release in the US back in 1997 and showbiz bible Variety said it was ‘nothing short of brilliant, both narratively and technically’ and compared it to an early Martin Scorsese movie.
Boogie Nights helped launch the careers of some of Hollywood’s biggest names, including Mark Wahlberg, John C. Reilly and Phillip Seymour Hoffman – even Heather’s naked roller girl scene landed her Best Breakout Star at the MTV Awards.
Take a look at the careers of some of the film’s biggest stars and where they are now.
Mark Wahlberg
Boogie Nights focusses on a young dishwasher working at a nightclub named Eddie Adams, also known as Dirk Diggler, who becomes a huge porno star.
Wahlberg received praise for his role, but some fans may not know that Eddie was based on John Holmes, a real porn actor who was known for his large penis.
At the end of the film, Hollywood paid homage to Holmes and “revealed” Digglers penis, a huge 13inch prop which has become one of Wahlberg’s prized possessions.
Mark appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show back in 2022 and admitted that he still has the phallic object hidden in his home.
He confessed: “Yes, yes. It’s in a safe, locked away. It’s not something I could leave out. All of a sudden my kids are looking for a spare phone charger and pull that thing out and go: ‘What the heck is this?!’ It wouldn’t be a good look.”
Wahlberg’s performance solidified his place in Hollywood, put his name on the map and launched a hugely successful acting career.
Since Boogie Nights, Mark has starred in The Other Guys, the Ted franchise, Daddy’s Home, Transformers and Planet of the Apes.
Back in 2017, Wahlberg was named the highest paid actor and his won many accolades including a BAFTA award along with nominations for Golden Globes, Academy Awards and Emmys Awards.
However, Wahlberg came from a troubled past and was sentenced to two years in prison for attempted murder at the age of just 16, serving only 45 days before he was freed.
Heather Graham
One of the most memorable stars from the film is Heather, who played Brandy the Rollergirl and constantly skated whenever on screen.
However, the role may not have landed in her lap as it had originally been offered to Hollywood’s Gwyneth Paltrow.
Graham previously spoke about the role and said: “It was really hard to book something great if you weren’t famous, so getting that job really was a massive breakthrough for me. And when you read a character and it’s named Rollergirl, you just think: ‘This is cool.’ She’s such a cool character, never takes off her roller skates!”
She went on to gush over her “original and unique” character that she knew was “super special”.
Graham also featured in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, The Hangover, Californication, Scrubs, The Stand and Emily’s Reasons Why Not.
Heather has opened up about her run-in with Harvey Weinstein and how he once pressured her into trading sex for a film role.
She spoke to Variety about the situation and revealed that when she was in Weinstein’s office in the early 2000s, the movie mogul told her he “wanted to put her in one of his movies” before mentioning that he had an “agreement” with his wife about sleeping with other women.
Graham admitted that she “walked out of the meeting feeling uneasy” and was never booked for one of his films.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman
In Boogie Nights Hoffman played Scotty J, a boom operator with a crush on Wahlberg’s Dirk Diggler.
He became one of the most well known actors from the film and his other projects include The Big Lebowski, The Talented Mr. Ripley, The Boat That Rocked and The Hunger Games.
At the height of his fame, Hoffman tragically died from a drug overdose in 2014 at the age of just 46-years-old.
He discussed his drug and alcohol misuse during his time at New York University in 2006 with CBS‘s 60 Minutes and admitted that after his graduation in 1989, the then 22-year-old entered a drug rehabilitation program and remained sober for 23 years.
However, he relapsed in 2013 and admitted himself to drug rehabilitation for ten days in May 2013.
Hoffman, who is survived by his partner Mimi O’Donnell and their three children, was due to pick up his kids but after the no-show, police officers found him dead at his home with a needle in his left arm.
John C. Reilly
Reilly played Reed Rothchild in the 1997 film and since his stellar performance, the actor has landed roles in big name blockbusters such as Step Brothers, Wreck It Ralph, Guardians of the Galaxy, 9, and Sing.
John tends to keep a low profile surrounding his personal life and not a lot is known, but he is happily married to his wife Alison and they share two children.
The duo co-produced 2000’s Skipped Parts featuring Drew Barrymore and Mischa Barton, along with The Sisters Brothers with Jaoquin Phoenix and Jake Gyllenhaal.
John and Alison are extremely supportive of their son Leo Reilly, who goes by the stage name LoveLeo and is pursuing a career in music and modelling.
Aside from this, Reilly prefers to keep his personal life personal and told GQ: “People monetise their privacy these days. You have to realise the value of your privacy and protect it.”
William H. Macy
Many will be familiar with Macy from his role as Frank Gallagher in the US version of Shameless.
Before landing the iconic role in 2010, he starred in Boogie Nights as Little Bill Thompson but began his acting career back in 1975 and has since gone on to star in Law and Order, Fargo, Bee Movie, Wild Hogs and Jurassic Park III.
He married award-winning actress Felicity Huffman in 1997, the same year Boogie Nights was released.
Many may also know Felicity from her role as Lynette Scavo in Desperate Housewives, but fans may also remember the college admissions scandal that surrounded the couple.
The pair hit the headlines back in 2019 for Operation Varsity Blues, which discovered that a number of people had conspired “to use bribery and other forms of fraud” to get their children into the top colleges in the country.
Macy was never charged but Huffman was sentenced to 14 days in prison.
