Inside I’m A Celeb Paul Burrell’s feud with Prince Harry – barbed jabs and ‘money grabs’

Prince Harry and a once-loyal butler Paul Burrell are locked in a bitter feud.

The servant was not just an employee of the late Princess Diana but he was considered one of her most loyal confidants after he was a butler to the British Royal Household.

However in recent years, he has been engulfed in a bitter feud with her second son, Prince Harry.

He first entered service as a footman in Buckingham Palace at the age of 18, before later becoming a personal footman to Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II a year later.

In 1987 he joined the household of the then-married couple Prince Charles and Princess Diana at Highgrove House, before coming the personal butler to the Princess Of Wales after her divorce when she moved to Kensington Palace until her death in 1997.

Mr Burrell previously spoke of his relationship with Princess Diana and said he was “the only man she ever trusted”, and she would describe him as her “rock” in his support during difficult times in her life.

However, just before Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle released their Netflix documentary series, Paul hit out at the son of his late friend.

Speaking on Piers Morgan Uncensored on talkTV, he claimed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex should be stripped of their royal titles as he branded their behaviour as “self obsessed narcissism”.

He told Piers Morgan: “They don’t want to be members of the Royal Family, so why should they trade on royal titles?”

Prince Harry is also known to be locked in a bitter feud with his brother Prince William and Paul also thought that their mother would be disappointed by his behaviour towards his older brother.

He explained: “She always thought it was Harry’s job to be William’s wingman, to be there for him on his path to monarchy.”

The former servant has also spoken out about private details between the brothers’ relationship from a young age, as he previously claimed that The Prince Of Wales was always made to feel more important than his younger brother, and he thought that fuelled the rivalry to this day.

He previously told The Sun that there were times at breakfast where Prince William would get bigger portions than his younger sibling and Harry would enquire why.

Paul said Prince Harry would say: “How come he gets three?” when the younger sibling would only have two on his own plate, to which a nanny would respond: “William needs filling up more than you. He’s going to be king one day.”

He recalled: “When I look back now, I think maybe I was glimpsing the dynamic at play and Harry would look at his plate and say, how come he gets three? And I only get two.”

The I’m a Celebrity… South Africa campmate added: “Harry would fall quiet and suck it up, but that’s what he had to contend with, even in his own home.

“I can see that Harry found it tough living up to the standard set by William.”

However, Paul published his own memoir, A Royal Duty, in 2001 which caused a rift with Buckingham Palace.

In a joint statement before the publication, Prince William and Prince Harry hit out at the servant as they called his written work a “cold and overt betrayal”.

But Prince Harry had again hit out at his late mother’s friend when he released his own memoir, Spare in January 2023.

The Duke of Sussex claimed in his bombshell book that Mr Burrell was “milking” his mother’s death for money when he released his own book A Royal Duty in 2001.

He wrote: “One day the package contained a series of memos from the Palace comms team about a delicate matter.

“Mummy’s former butler had penned a tell-all, which actually told nothing. It was merely one man’s self-justifying, self-centring version of events.

“My mother once called this butler a dear friend, trusted him implicitly. We did too. Now this. He was milking her disappearance for money. It made my blood boil.”

It seems Paul was hurt by the Prince’s comments in his memoir and has since hit out at both Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle saying that he is now a changed man.

Speaking on ITV’s Lorraine after the publication he said: “[Harry’s] known me all his life as ‘Paul’. He knew how much I loved his mother and protected her memory, he knows all of that.

“Why did he call me ‘Mummy’s Butler?’ Why couldn’t he have asked, come to me personally and said he wasn’t happy with the situation?

“I’ve always defended [Harry] down to the last minute and now I’m thinking, ‘Harry, you’ve lost the plot.'”

He added: “What’s happened? There’s been a shift in that young man, he’s changed and I’m saddened by it.”
