Fans tuning in to watch this year’s MTV Movie and TV Awards have labelled the show “completely bizarre” and a “nightmare” after bosses scrapped the live awards show.
MTV bosses announced they would not be broadcasting live on Sunday (May 7) after host Drew Barrymore quit her presenting stint to support the current screenwriters’ Guild of America (WGA) strike.
Instead of a live broadcast, MTV chose to air a pre-recorded show which included previous show clips where they announced this year’s awards with recorded acceptance speeches.

Soon after the awards show aired, confused viewers took to social media where they shared their reaction to the “awkward” pre-recorded ceremony where there was no host but an automated voiceover.
“Is this not the typical MTV movie awards lmao? I’m so lost #MTVAwards,” complained one confused viewer.

While a second penned: “The MTV Movie Awards is on if anyone needs a reason to turn off the TV and go to bed.”
A third chimed in, adding: “This is the weirdest award show I have ever witnessed in my life like I am in confusion! It’s like a dystopian nightmare #MTVmovieAwards.”
A fourth viewer chimed: “It’s all pre-recorded, so basically, it’s just doing mtv award previous show clips and then announcing awards with recorded acceptance speeches.”

While a fourth voiced: “They really should’ve cancelled it and/or distributed the awards online some way. Kinda tone deaf with picketers outside.”
It comes after host Drew Barrymore and other celebrities, including Jamie Lee Curtis, pulled out of attending the awards as an act of solidarity with the writers striking.
“Everything we celebrate and honour about movies and television is born out of [the WGA writers’] creation,” she said in a statement shared by a representative for the actress on Thursday.

Before adding: “And until a solution is reached, I am choosing to wait. But I’ll be watching from home on Sunday night, and I hope everyone else will as well.”
In addition, the WGA had announced plans to picket the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, where the live event was scheduled to take place.
