Iconic 90s crushes now – rotting teeth, death threats and nipple confessions

We’ve all been there. Practicing your kissing skills on the posters of 90s hunks pinned to your bedroom wall.

No – just me?

The nineties were a time for plenty of teen idols to rise to prominence, from a young Sarah Michelle Gellar in Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer to the various spices of the Spice Girls.

Who could forget Friends alum Jennifer Aniston, who had a rather racy confession to share about her perky nipples?

And though plenty of them remain in the public eye today, others have sadly faded into obscurity.

Daily Star takes a look at where they all ended up.

Victoria Beckham

With a whopping net worth of $450 million, Posh Spice has undoubtedly done well for herself.

The WAG made up one fifth of the Spice Girls until 2001, and since then has gone on to become an internationally recognised fashion designer.

Victoria married footballer David back in 1999, and the pair have since had four famous children.

But it hasn’t all been plain sailing. In 2000, Scotland Yard detectives uncovered a plot to kidnap Victoria and her son Brooklyn and hold them hostage in London. She’s also been on the receiving end of death threats and had to be rushed off stage during Brit Awards rehearsals due to a potential assassin in the building.

Victoria was allegedly embroiled in a feud with her daughter-in-law Nicola Peltz Beckham amid her wedding to Brooklyn, as she didn’t wear a dress designed by Victoria on her big day.

Things are reportedly looking a lot peachier between the pair now.

Mark Owen

First one fifth and now one third of 90s boy band Take That, Mark Owen made major waves with his lead vocals on Babe in 1993. During the band’s first run, he swept up awards including Smash Hit’s ‘Most Fanciable Male in the World’.

Though Take That have had a tempestuous run since their first split in 1996, with Robbie Williams and Jason Orange bidding the band farewell, Mark has stuck with Gary and Howard, embarking on their latest Odyssey tour in 2019.

He also released a wealth of solo albums, including his last, The Art of Doing Nothing, in 2013.

His love life has mirrored his music career for all its drama – he publicly admitted to having multiple affairs in 2010, and attended rehab that year for his alcohol addiction. He married Emma Ferguson in 2009, and the couple have three children together.

Kerry Katona

Best known for being one third of the iconic 90s/00s girl group Atomic Kitten from 1998, Kerry Katona has also paid her dues in the Australian jungle – and took home the crown.

The lap dancer turned pop star left Atomic Kitten in 2001, then returned for a five-year stint in 2012. She also placed as runner-up in Celebrity Big Brother in 2011, and even featured on Celebs Go Dating.

Her love life has been similarly eclectic. She married Westlife star Brian McFadden in 2002 and divorced him in 2006, then rewed to Mark Croft in 2007. Her last husband was George Kay, who she divorced in 2017. She has five children.

Kerry made headlines recently as she set up an OnlyFans page – and has since raked in millions.

Johnny Depp

The star might have come roaring back into the spotlight for his legal proceedings with ex-wife Amber Heard, throughout which she has alleged domestic violence, but Johnny Depp actually rose to prominence as a teen idol on 21 Jump Street from 1987-1990.

That wasn’t all the 90s had in store for the prolific actor, though – he went on to play the titular character in 1990’s Edward Scissorhands, cementing his love for niche, out-there characters.

From Pirates of the Caribbean to Sweeney Todd, the actor has since starred in a growing number of roles, from the niche to the openly bizarre.

Johnny is not the tenth highest-grossing actor in a lead role worldwide, although he was recently cut loose from the JK Rowling-penned Fantastic Beasts film franchise due to Amber Heard’s claims of physical and verbal abuse.

Johnny eventually won the defamation case and returned to the spotlight at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, receiving a 10-minute standing ovation.

Sarah Michelle Gellar

If you were around in the 90s, chances are Sarah Michelle Gellar made quite the impression as Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Her first ever role was in the made-for-TV film An Invasion of Privacy, but she shot to fame after starring in US soap All My Children. Since then she made her name in various franchises including Scream, The Grudge and the live-action Scooby Doo movies.

Just as iconic is her long-term romance and marriage to co-star Freddie Prinze Jr, with whom she has two children.

Sarah released her own cookbook in 2017, after founding baking kit company Footstirs two years prior.

Keanu Reeves

Keanu Reeves has led a tragic life

Though arguably his most iconic role was Neo in The Matrix back in 1999, Keanu Reeves is probably best known for his difficult life and subsequent philanthropy.

Keanu’s father abandoned the family when he was aged just three, and he was expelled from school when he was a teenager. Still, he pursued professional acting and landed roles in films like Point Break and Speed in the 90s, before going on to star as John Wick in 2014.

Keanu is famously guarded around his love life, but in 2020 was rumoured to be dating artist Alexandra Grant.

Keanu’s daughter Ava Archer Syme-Reeves was tragically stillborn on Christmas Eve of 1999, and his relationship with his girlfriend – Ava’s mum – Jennifer broke down shortly afterwards.

Two years later, after attending a party with Marilyn Mason, Jennifer was involved in a fatal car crash while driving drunk, and was thrown from her seat, dying instantly.

Keanu reportedly found it “very, very difficult to cope with her death”.

Jennifer Aniston

The Friends star made her film debut in 1988 with an uncredited appearance in Mac and Me, but her first major break came with horror-comedy Leprechaun in 1993. She scooped a regular role as Rachel Green in Friends back in 1994, and stormed onto sitcom screens worldwide.

Jennifer married Hollywood icon Brad Pitt in 2000, but divorced in 2005. She later wed Justin Theroux in 2015, but the pair couldn’t make the marriage last and went their separate ways in 2017.

After leaving Friends in the early noughties, Jennifer faced numerous questions about none other than her perky nipples while filming the sitcom.

She confessed to Vogue: “Yeah, I don’t know what to say about that! It’s just one of those things, I guess.

“I wear a bra. I don’t know what to tell you! And I don’t know why I’m supposed to be ashamed of them – it’s just the way my breasts are.”

The star added: “But hey, I’m not going to complain!”

Justin Timberlake

Ah, the innocent old days when Justin Timberlake was still a part of NSYNC.

Justin went from child star to a member of one of the bestselling boy bands of all time, and has two Grammys as a solo artist as well.

The SexyBack vocalist turned to acting in 2008, starring in films like The Social Network and In Time, but resumed his music career in 2013 with The 20/20 Experience. He’s since had hits including Mirrors and Can’t Stop the Feeling.

He dated Britney Spears from 1999 to 2002, but eventually married actress Jessica Biel in 2012. The couple currently have two children together.

Uma Thurman

The Pulp Fiction actress was catapulted to fame in 1994, and has since been hailed as director Quentin Tarantino’s muse.

Uma quickly established herself as a leading Hollywood star, starring in films like Batman & Robin, Kill Bill Volumes 1 and 2, and Les Misérables.

Uma married Gary Oldman in 1990, but they divorced two years later. In 1998 she remarried to Ethan Hawke, in a relationship that lasted until 2005. The pair had two children together – Maya Hawke and Levon Roan Thurman-Hawke. Uma also had daughter Luna Thurman-Busson with partner Arpad Busson in 2012.

Baby-faced Ashton Kutcher made his debut in That ‘70s show back in 1998, where he remained until 2006, but the Hollywood heart-throb has since moulded himself into a venture capitalist.

It’s a long way from starring in films like Dude, Where’s My Car?, but he’s made it work. He co-founded A-Grade Investments and has invested in at least five start-ups since 2017.

Ashton married Brat Pack member Demi Moore back in 2005, but the pair divorced in 2013, with Demi later commenting that he offered “no compassion” when she needed him most.

Demi wrote in her memoir that while she was suffering from alcohol addiction, Ashton would encourage her to drink, yet “shame” her for it if she drank too much.

Ashton later married actress Mila Kunis in 2015. The couple have two children together.
