Hollyoaks star Jamelia’s love life – ‘the man’, domestic abuse and heartbreaking split

Jamelia is best known for her ten top-10 hit songs , four albums, her TV appearances on shows such as This Morning and Loose Women and her acting on Channel 4’s Hollyoaks.

However away from the cameras and the recording studios, she has had a turbulent personal life through the years and the Daily Star is taking a look back.

She grew up without her father, mostly due to the fact that he was often in and out of prison on armed robbery charges and she hinted that the effects from this affected her choices.

She previously told The Guardian : “I grew up without my dad being involved with my upbringing, without a father figure of any sort. Had I had one, my choices of partner would have been better.

“I first met my dad when I was 18 months old, but he was in and out of my life because he was also in and out of prison. He got out when I was 15, and by that time we couldn’t get a relationship going because he had let me down so many times.”

Jamelia was first in a relationship with music manager Terry Wallen, where they share a daughter, Teja, together who was born in 2001.

However he was abusive towards her and she later claimed that he was the inspiration behind her song ‘Thank You’.

She previously opened up on her domestic violence hell on Loose Women where she explained how he would hit her, even when she would be breastfeeding her child.

She said: “With domestic abuse is it’s something you never get over. You can come to terms with it and forgive but the scars will always remain.

“This was whilst I was enjoying a career and I would be on Top Of The Pops one minute and then I would be going home and getting punched in the face. It is very difficult to say aloud.”

“The embarrassment causes you to isolate yourself and that’s a great environment for them to continue to control you. I stopped talking to my family, I stopped being around them not in a way that we were in an argument or anything just so I kept myself to him, he became my whole world, everything.

“For me it was whatever I can do to keep him happy, whatever I can do to stop getting hit. I was absolutely convinced that as long as I’m good I won’t get hit.”

“For me it is when my daughter was four weeks old and he hit me when I was breast feeding her, and it was at that point that I realised that being in a relationship is a choice and I am choosing this and I am going to continue to choose this on behalf of my child. Do I want this to be her reality?

“As scared as I was, I was completely fearful of being killed and I thought I’d much rather leave and risk him killing me, than stay with him and have my daughter watch him slowly kill me anyway,”

Jamelia then found love with Darren Byfield, where they also share a daughter, Tiani, who was born on 21 October 2005.

In August of 2007 the pair briefly split before they reconciled a few months later and in October of that year they were engaged.

At the time Jamelia said: “”I’m completely over the moon. Darren proposing was a real surprise but I’m totally delighted. I can’t stop smiling!”

The Superstar singer threw a surprise birthday party for Bristol City player Byfield in Birmingham after performing at London’s Olympia.

But the real surprise was to come as Byfield got down on one knee and popped the question in front of family and friends.

The couple were married on 14 June 2008 in a ceremony in West Sussex, however just over a year later in November 2009, the pair filed for divorce.

For a while, Jamelia took a step away from the spotlight during which she met her mystery partner.

The pair met in 2017 where they got married after a few months together, and the media personality fell pregnant just weeks later.

However, the star’s pregnancy wasn’t easy as her waters broke at just 23 weeks and doctors said she could deliver at any minute.

Jamelia managed to get to 36 weeks before she gave birth to her daughter True, who arrived happy and healthy.

Speaking about the experience she told Hello! Magazine: “I didn’t know your waters could break and you can still carry the baby, there are so many problems that come along with that happening. It was a really scary time for all of us.

“They keep calling my daughter a miracle baby. Going through something like that really opens your eyes.”

In August of 2022, Jamelia announced that she was pregnant again as she expected her fourth child.

The singer shared a picture of her daughters — Teja, 20, Tiani, 16, and True, four — cradling her baby bump on Instagram page on Wednesday (August 3).

Captioning the post, Jamelia wrote: “Swipe for a Surprise. Wasn’t sure how to ‘announce’ lol…but I thought I’d share the one time in the past few months I’ve looked like Smaddy Madda (somebody’s mother).

“The excitement on our faces is real, but the struggle has been also ( I’m sure I’ll fill you in when I’m ready).”

She added: “Keep us all in your prayers, We’re so excited, and feeling so so so so blessed!”

The singer later gave birth to her fourth daughter after an emergency Caesarean on 4 October. Her waters broke at 32 weeks and she was monitored in hospital.

She told Hello! Magazine : “She’s by far the easiest and most straightforward baby I’ve had, she’s a good communicator, very chilled and has seamlessly imprinted herself onto the family. It’s been a dream to have her.”

“It was so scary,” says Jamelia. “I felt like I was in labour for a month, but the main objective was to keep the baby in for as long as possible. I just had to hold on.

“I’d only ever seen a C-section on the telly, and thought: ‘Oh well, at least it’s going to be straightforward and I’ll be out in five minutes.’ There’s this idea of ‘too posh to push’ – that it’s the easier option. But I found it incredibly traumatic. And then you’re recovering from major surgery while looking after a newborn.”
