New Netflix horror series is so terrifying fans are warning ‘just don’t watch it’

Netflix fans are warning others “just don’t watch” a haunting new series set to debut this week. The Fall of the House of Usher, from the minds behind The Haunting of Hill House, is set to debut tomorrow (October 12), but has already been seen by critics.

The show has debuted with a 95% Rotten Tomatoes score, with director Mike Flanagan seeming to pull off yet another horror hit after coming up with The Haunting of Bly Manor and Oculus.

The new season will follow Roderick Usher, the corrupt CEO of a pharmaceutical company, who has to face up to the secrets of his dark past when his children start to die one by one in grisly ways. It’s based on Edgar Allen Poe’s 1839 short story, but with a “fresh, freaky twist”. Actor Carla Gugino teased: “It’s batsh*t crazy in the best possible way. It has quite a lot of very dark humour, but also really touches the soul.”

Some of the early reviews are already in, with Andrew Webster of The Verge writing: “The mystery, which seems so obvious early on, becomes more complicated and even darker than I first imagined.” While Andrew Parker of The Gate branded the series “deliciously gory and ghoulish”.

Maria Lattila from Film Stories added: “It’s macabre, seductive and completely addictive.” While We Got This Covered’s Scott Campbell said it’s “dripping in atmosphere, shivers, and subtext.”

Over on X – formerly known as Twitter – fans are issuing warnings for those who are easily spooked, with one penning: “Based on previous series I’m just not gonna watch the fall of the house of usher and I advise you all to do the same unless you want sleepless nights!!”

Someone else said: “I’m late to the Fall of the House of Usher hype, but I promise this show is a sick and gory romp that gets right to the chase. Mind-blowing deaths, wild sex, lying, cheating, grossly sick b*****ds — all the goodies. Mike Flanagan took tricky source material and made it his own.”

House of Usher is set to be Flanagan’s final project on Netflix, with the filmmaker moving over to Amazon Studios after six years at the streaming service. In a joint statement with creative partner Trevor Macy, he said: “Amazon is a studio that we have long admired. Their commitment to engaging in groundbreaking series and content aligns with the ethos of what we have built at Intrepid [Studios].

“We are looking forward to working with the entire Amazon team as we bring our brand of genre productions to the service and audiences around the globe.” The deal is supposedly just for series, meaning the team could still produce films elsewhere.
