ITV Emmerdale star confirms huge return to screens seven years after soap exit

A former Emmerdale star is set to return to screens as they reveal a huge new project.

Gemma Atkinson was a staple of the ITV soap when she first joined the show in 2015 as Carly, the troubled daughter of Bob Hope. However, after two years in the village, Gemma called time on her stint on the show after Carly had a fling with fellow character Marlon Dingle, something that Atkinson was supposedly unhappy about filming.

The actress and former glamour model, 39, first shot to fame when she played Lisa Hunter in Hollyoaks from 2001 to 2005. After her stint on the Channel 4 soap, she moved to the world of reality TV, going into the jungle on I’m A Celebrity, as well as Celebrity MasterChef and Soapstar Superstar.

Atkinson, who currently works at Hits Radio as a presenter, is a proud mum-of-two as she recently welcomed baby Thiago into the world in August with Strictly Come Dancing star Gorka Márquez. The pair also have a daughter Mia, aged four.

But now, Gemma has revealed that she will be returning to screens in a huge new career move. However, while she paid tribute to her former jobs on the soaps, she confirmed she would not be returning to Emmerdale or Hollyoaks any time soon.

When asked by a fan on her social media, she confirmed she had left the soap world behind. “I wouldn’t be able to commit to soaps long term again, even though I loved it at the time,” she said.

“It changes day to day, so with children, it’s difficult. Especially with Gorks being away from August [to work on Strictly], I need to work around them ideally.”

Giving her fans some exclusive information, she revealed: “I can do any drama or films though with a start and end date filming-wise, which I’d absolutely do. I’m shooting a British movie in March actually, which is exciting!”

However, despite the huge bombshell she dropped, Gemma refused to give any more details away until later on in the project. Elsewhere in the Q&A session on her social platforms, she added that her time on Strictly was her favourite job she had, as it helped to introduce her to her fiancé and the father of her two children.

During the official Strictly tour that followed her series, love was struck between Gorka and Germma – despite being with different dance partners during the show. According to Gemma, however, things changed when Gorka asked her out to breakfast, which is when the pair became joined at the hip.

Atkinson added that it “wasn’t a secret” that pair had been getting it on during the course of the tour. She admitted that “all the cast knew”, but believed it to be a fling as the pair lived in different cities – which is why Gemma suggested having a holiday together to see how strong their relationship was.

Jetting off to Tenerife for three weeks, Gorka and Gemma were inseparable for the entirety of the holiday. She insisted: “They always say going on holiday with someone is a good test. We went – and we loved it.”
