Jodie Comer ‘covered vagina with a bin bag’ for awkward legs-spread film scene

Jodie Comer was forced to cover ‘her’ vagina up with a bin bag for an awkward labour scene in her new movie The End We Start From.

Based on the 2017 post-apocalyptic novel by Megan Hunter, the film follows Jodie’s unnamed character – a new mum who has to raise her baby in a flooded city, ravaged by climate change. But in one scene, she’s seen screaming her way through giving birth – and it was difficult to shoot.

Appearing on The Graham Norton Show last weekend, Jodie confessed that filmmakers used a pair of fake legs to spread in stirrups on the bed, while her own legs rested on the floor. A huge black bin bag was then placed over the false vagina proudly on display for “modesty”.

In an incredible behind-the-scenes snap, Jodie could be seen raising one arm casually over her head and pouting for the camera, while rocking a pair of pink socks on her feet and a sheet covering her real body. She explained: “That’s a bin bag that was hiding the modesty between takes.”

Fellow guests Kevin Hart and Sofia Vergara were baffled as they questioned why she was protecting the fake genitals, but Jodie said: “Yeah, but it was out! It made me feel better. I felt less exposed.”

She went on to explain: “Everyone was looking after me – bringing me coffee and stuff, to keep me awake.”

Kevin Hart refused to so much as glance at the snap, only afterwards quipping: “Clearly an attempt to take a Black man down. That’s what this is. As soon as I look at that, ‘what are you doing, Kevin?’ I know what this is, Jodie. I didn’t fall for the trap. I sat and drank my wine.”

Jodie had to work alongside 15 different babies for the role, aged from eight weeks old to young toddlers. Each child was only allowed to be part of a scene for 20 minutes at a time, so would constantly need to be replaced.

Jodie told the BBC: “A lot of my younger cousins have grown up now, so I haven’t spent a lot of time around young babies. My hands were visibly shaking when I met an eight-week-old on set. I was like, ‘Oh my god, what have I done?’”

She went on: “It’s one thing to act and think about everything else, but then actually being conscious of this precious little being and making sure that they’re safe…”

In one scene, the baby fell asleep in her arms, like a “little sack of potatoes”. When crew members offered to take him away, she replied: “Just keep him there. I’m good – because he’s settled, he’s quiet. We’re happy.” Film director Mahalia Belo added: “In the sound you can hear him snoring!”

The End We Start From also stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Joel Fry and Mark Strong. It’s out in UK cinemas now.
