Ryan Gosling has spoken of his “disappointment” after his Barbie co-stars were not given a nomination for an Oscar.
The Oscars ceremony takes place in March, but the nominations for each category were revealed in a lavish ceremony on Tuesday (January 23). Following the announcements, it was revealed that Barbie had received eight nods for an award, including Best Picture.
However, controversy has erupted after lead actress Margot Robbie, who plays Barbie in the film, was not nominated for Best Actress. Similarly, director Greta Gerwig, who has directed other box office smashes including Lady Bird, was not recognised for her work and was snubbed from the Best Director category.

The decision not to include Margot and Greta in their respective category has sparked fury from movie-goers and actors alike. And now, it seems that some of their co-stars themselves have weighed in, with Ryan Gosling giving his thoughts on the decision.
In a statement given to American broadcaster CBS, Gosling said he was “extremely honoured” to receive a nod for his role as Ken in the movie. But he added that there should be recognition for the female power made thanks to the film.
“There is no Ken without Barbie and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally-celebrated film,” he wrote. “No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit and genius.”
He continued: “To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement. Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture and they made history; their work should be recognised along with other very deserving nominees.”
Whilst Margot and Greta were not nominated in their respective categories, the pair were recognised elsewhere in the nominations. Margot received a nod for her producer role in the film, whilst Gerwig was lauded in the category of Best Adapted Screenplay, alongside husband Noah Baumbach.
The Barbie film dominated cinemas last summer as it coincided with the release of Oppenheimer – resulting in the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon that swept the world in July. Whilst Oppenheimer appears to be cleaning up in the award shows, Barbie won the court of public opinion, becoming the highest grossing film of the year – making over $1.4billion at the box office.
However, it was not all disappointment for Ryan, who beamed with joy at America Ferrera’s nomination for Best Supporting Actress. The Ugly Betty star herself said she was “incredibly disappointed” that Gerwig and Robbie were snubbed by the ceremony.
The Oscars will take place on March 10 and will be broadcast in the UK for the first time on ITV. American comedic legend and late night chat show host Jimmy Kimmel will reprise his role as host for the proceedings for the fourth time.
