Ex-Emmerdale star Gemma Oaten has opened up about an “unhealthy” relationship that left her “with nothing”.
The soap star, who played Rachel Breckle on the soap, claims she “lost everything” by the time she eventually managed to leave her “gaslighting” ex. In a heartwrenching social media post, the mother opened up about the toughest parts of being in the couple and how much her beloved dog has played an important part in her life.
Taking to Instagram, she explained: “You know – sometimes going above & beyond for someone else can pay off. It may feel like hard work, but if you believe in them & love them, well, you do it. Equally, if you see potential & feel a connection from your heart, mind & soul…It is a gift to give!”

She continued: “When I first became the Fur Mum of @ruby_schnoodle_tuesday_ six years ago, I was in a relationship that was beyond unhealthy. I did everything I could to protect her, to the detriment of myself, as arguments would ensue of me “taking her away & being selfish” he would turn anything he could on me after love bombing, gaslighting – the works. However, I am also accountable. I was so desperate to please & to be loved…”
She added: “Back to Ruby. The truth was – if I’d have left her with them, she wouldn’t be here & if I’d have stayed with with her, for him, I probably wouldn’t be here either. I left. I took the dog. I lost everything. He took everything monetary from me, but he didn’t take me.
“I won my court case but never saw a penny…our justice system, eh…?! But pay off for putting her 1st & letting go of this injustice? Look at us now. She taught me how to keep giving & going. She taught me what unconditional love is, & that, yes, it can come from humans WHO SEE YOU too.
“Yup, she’s having health problems & heck has she seen me have some issues over the last few years, but here we are. She wags her tail & goes berserk every morning we wake up. She gives not just me, but so many, such pure joy. She is thriving!
Having gone through horrendous trauma in her life, the pet owner is determined to help others going through similar systems get the support they need. She explained: “My point? Charities go the extra mile because, more often than not, it comes from gaps in the system that we need to fill, & like @seedsupportuk, it comes from lived experience.
“Don’t let red tape, the system or “KPI’s” stop you from helping people. This is my biggest bugbear in the care system & NHS. So many of us just want to help by being kind. By being us. So many are torn apart… They need us! We need to look at the system. Truly. I feel like 2024 is the year I must keep hammering home the importance of person-centred approach & charities. You matter. Go the extra mile. G xxx”
Her fans rushed to her aid, with one writing: “I love the photos dogs give unconditional love. This is such a sad story, but you are very brave to talk about this. You have come through it, and you are the better person.
“You are so beautiful and strong you deserve the best. You know you are my hero and inspiration. I will make you proud of me . Sending hugs from one proud seedling.” Another said: “I’m sorry to read you went through all that.”
At the age of ten, Gemma began to suffer from anorexia. Consequently, her doting parents went above and beyond to help, starting SEED, an eating disorder support service. The actress is now the CEO, providing her knowledge and experience as a vessel to aid other people in their journeys to recovery.
