Dancing on Ice duo Torvill and Dean did get it on as teens – but believe the secret to their success was never sleeping together.
The former Olympic and four-time world champs, who have been together for 50 years, admitted they were more than friends when they were younger – but “it didn’t last very long”. Speaking on the High Performance podcast Jayne Torvill, 66, and Christopher Dean, 65, were asked if their relationship had ever “crossed the line’.
Dean said: “When we were younger. But it didn’t last very long. I think we just eventually got into that place where we knew that we were the best of friends. I think that mutual friendship has got us to this point now, 50 years later.”

Dean added their recipe for success was: “Don’t sleep with each other.” Torvill said they had briefly hooked up in the early days.
She continued: “Quite often we get asked, ‘What’s the secret of your friendship?’ We never got married.”
The skating legends who retired in 1996 after their famous Bolero routine have become a force to reckon with as judges on ITV’s Dancing on Ice. Since 2006, they’ve put celebs through their paces on the show.
The pair, who returned for this year’s series, admitted they smooched on a bus while travelling together as teens. Torvill said: “We did actually kiss once – before we were a skating couple.
She added: “It was a one-off. We never talked about it afterwards. We laugh about it now.”
Dean said “We were 14-years-old, and teenagers in the most naive sense. We didn’t talk about it much after. The skating was everything and having a relationship just didn’t occur to us.”
In 2011, Torvill first revealed that she and Dean had banned sleeping together. This is because any splits could have cost them their skating success.
She said: “We decided very early on that if we had slept together we couldn’t have skated. I remember somebody saying to me, ‘If you’re dating your skating partner and the relationship breaks down, you won’t have your skating partner’.”
