Jeremy Clarkson’s Farm Amazon show is huge hit in China as millions tune in

Jeremy Clarkson is massive in China.

The 64-year-old former Top Gear host’s Clarkson’s Farm show is a massive hit in the country. Millions of Chinese are fans and think he’s shining a light on the “brutality” of agricultural life many of their famers struggle through.

Clarkson’s show has a 9.6 out of 10 rating on the Chinese review website Douban where nearly 80,000 people have left glowing recommendations for the show. It has also been watched more than five million times on the Chinese streaming service BiliBili.

One reviewer said a scene in an early episode of the show where Clarkson accidentally spoils a huge shipment of seeds by leaving it outside the barn was especially poignant. They gushed on Douban: “I often saw adults pulling up a bag of seeds that accidentally germinated early due to rainy weather, and looking at them with regret. His face was full of disappointment and distress.

“Anyone who has lived and worked in the countryside can understand the pain and sweat shed by hard work.” Clarkson’s show also resonates with youths in China.

Zoe Mou, a millennial from the northern city of Dalian, discovered the show during Covid lockdown in Beijing. They said: “I was in my apartment, mostly just binge-watching shows, playing video games, being depressed and drinking and video-calling with my friends.

“Watching Clarkson’s Farm took me outside of that little circle – and taught me something about agriculture.” Others in China have branded Clarkson “the British version of Li Ziqi”.

She is a 33-year-old woman who has become one of China’s biggest Internet celebrities thanks to posting videos of herself sharing her experiences of farming and cooking in the Sichuanese countryside.
