The Wiggles’ real lives exposed with ‘love squares’ and tense co-star divorces

The Wiggles might conjure simple memories of kids’ song and dance numbers to while away the hours in front of the telly – but in real life, the entertainers have faced plenty of drama.

The Australia-based band, known for their bright costumes and big red car have come up with jingles and routines like The Monkey Dance and Fruit Salad. Entertaining children the world over, the four-piece even had a ride made based on their iconic franchise.

Away from the cameras, though, the stars have faced controversy and drama, after Purple Wiggle Lachlan Gillespie ended up romancing one of his fellow Wiggles. Lachlan announced in 2015 that he had been in a secret relationship with Yellow Wiggle Emma Watkins for two years, beginning in 2013.

They first met in 2009, and eventually walked down the aisle in April 2016. It was just two years later, however, that the pair decided to call it quits and went their separate ways – despite insisting they’re still the “best of friends”.

Lachlan said at the time: “To be able to realise as a couple that we were going different ways and to stay as close as we are is a real testament, I think, to both of us. I love her more now than anything and she loves me more than anything.”

Despite their rocky split, Emma remained a member of the Wiggles until 2021, when she quit the group to pursue pastures new. But in a twist of fate, both Wiggles found love with other members of the band – creating a bizarre “love square”.

Lachlan fell for ballet dancer Dana Stephensen when she made a Wiggles cameo in 2018, and the pair got engaged in 2020. That same year, Dana welcomed twin baby girls with Lachlan – Lulu and Lottie. The pair finally married in 2022.

In a sweet twist of fate, both Lachlan and Dana proposed separately to one another, with Dana explaining: “At the end of our summer holidays, I walked into the most beautiful surprise – a room filled with the most incredible flowers and Lachy singing at his piano and then asking me to marry him.”

Lachlan, meanwhile, explained Dana “asked me to marry her at home under a fairy light sky and a very excited little boy in a beautiful bow tie” – her young son Jasper from a previous relationship.

Emma, meanwhile, cosied up to the Wiggles musician Oliver Brian, and confirmed their relationship in 2019. She said: “He is the very opposite to me. He’s a very calm and thoughtful person and I’ve always been interested in his mind and his take on life, and his morals.” They tied the knot in 2022.

Their marriages aren’t the only co-star romances that blossomed on set of the Wiggles. Red Wiggle Simon Pryce ended up tying the knot to Dorothy the Dinosaur – the green and yellow polka-dot ‘rosasaur’ who made her debut in the children’s show in 1991.

Dorothy was portrayed on the 2011 Wiggles tour by Lauren Hannaford, who also played Wags the Dog and Henry the Octopus alongside Simon. The pair quickly fell in love while working together, marrying six years later and going on to welcome son Asher in 2021.
