Simple Minds drummer Kenny Hyslop has sadly passed at the age of 73.
His death was announced on Tuesday (September 17) by Ultravox singer Midge Ure who paid tribute to his “old friend” on social media. His cause of death is not currently known but it’s said Hyslop had been ill for some time.
He wrote: “Just about to board the British Airways flight from JFK and heard my old friend/Slik/Simple Minds drummer Kenny Hyslop has passed way. He lived a lively life! Huge condolences to his friends and family. He was much loved [prayer emoji].”

The rocker was part of Ure’s band Salvation – later named Slik – but joined Simple Minds in 1981 to replace Brian McGee and stayed for a year. They were one of the most commercially successful live bands of the 1980s.

During the 80s and 90s, the group clocked up 24 top 40 singles on the UK charts, and ore than 20 albums on the album charts They have sold more than 60million albums worldwide and have huge fan base across Europe and the US.
After the tragic news hit the headlines, fans flooded to social media to share their sympathies online. One user wrote: “So sad, chatted to Kenny quite a bit online in the last few years met him over 40 years ago.
“One hell of a drummer! Fly straight Kenny.” Another penned: “It doesn’t seem fair, it only seemed that a month or so ago, I messaged him and he told me that his treatment was going well”.

A third gushed: “Nooooooooo!!!! Not another death, I can’t handle it this week! This is really sad, I was just talking about him with @brucerisk a couple of weeks back – superb drummer.”
A fourth echoed: “Met him a few times over the years, a nice guy. This is a big shame.” Hyslop, who was born in Helensburgh in 1951, spent most of his life working in the music industry both in the UK and in Canada.
The Glasgow-based band became known for their string of hits including Don’t You and Alive And Kicking. He featured on the song Promised You A Miracle, and appeared in the videos of the Simple Mins hit Sweat in Bullet, and Love Song, although he did not record the tracks.

As well as Simple Minds, the musician also played with Set The Tone, The O’Clock Gang and the blues band Big George and the Business. In his twilight years, he taught drumming at Carlton Studios in Glasgow, as well as producing new music which he published through Myspace.
