Janey Godley announces she’s receiving ‘end-of-life’ care in heartbreaking cancer update

Janey Godley has announced she’s receiving end-of-life care as her cancer has spread.

The 63-year-old Glasgow comic had to cancel her autumn tour earlier this month following her doctor’s orders to stop performing. In a heartfelt video dropped on X, formerly Twitter, Janey revealed she was receiving palliative care and would be entering a hospice following her ovarian cancer diagnosis.

The comedian admitted it was tough to chat about after revealing that chemo was no longer on the cards. “The chemo ran out of options, and I couldn’t take anymore of it,” she said.

“The cancer has spread, so it looks like this will be getting to near the end of it, and it’s really difficult to speak about this and say it to people. It is devastating news, to know that I’m facing end of life but we all come to an end some time.

“I don’t know how long I’ve got left before anybody asks, I’m not a tick tock, I just want you all to know that I appreciate all the love you’ve gave me. Cancer affects one in two people and it’s affected me.”, reports the Mirror.

Janey finished her update by throwing her support behind others grappling with a “life-limiting disease” confirming it’s the reason her tour – Why Is She Still Here? – had been axed. The tour had dates across the UK including London, Belfast and Edinburgh.

However, medical advice has led her to cease work “for the foreseeable future”. A statement about the comedian’s career read: “It is with huge sadness that we must announce the cancellation of Janey Godley’s autumn 2024 tour.

“Janey has been living with stage four ovarian cancer for the past few years and the treatment from the wonderful Scottish NHS has kept the disease at bay, but sadly in the last few weeks the cancer has returned and there have been a few added complications. Her doctors have now advised her that she must stop work for the foreseeable future.

“Janey is devastated to let down her thousands of loyal fans, and the wonderful venues, she has played many times over the years. She would like to thank everyone for their love and support at this difficult time.”

Godley first shared her ovarian cancer diagnosis in 2021, and by 2022 she had received the all-clear, posting on X that a scan showed “no evidence of disease”. However, a subsequent scan revealed signs of the disease in her abdomen, despite which she had planned to continue with her tour in February and March 2023.
