Who’s back for Squid Game season 2? Netflix fans ‘work out’ who will return as new faces revealed

*Warning: This article contains spoilers for Squid Game season 1.*

Get ready to binge-watch because Squid Game season 2 is dropping on Netflix this Boxing Day, and the fan theories are already flying about who’s making a comeback in the lethal contest.

The hit South Korean dystopian drama will see the first season’s winner, Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae), return with a mission to dismantle the vile puppet masters behind the brutal games we witnessed previously.

A fresh group of desperate contestants will also be introduced, risking their lives and resorting to murder for a shot at bagging a fortune, reports the Mirror.

It’s been confirmed that Wi Ha-joon will reprise his role as Detective Hwang Jun-ho, whose fate was left ambiguous as we never saw him die.

Also making a return are the Front Man (portrayed by Lee Byung-hun), who turns out to be the Detective’s brother, and the enigmatic suit-clad man played by Gong Yoo.

Season 2 will welcome 12 new faces to the fray, including Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Park Sung-hoon, Jo Yu-ri, Yang Dong-geun, Kang Ae-sim, Lee David, Lee Jin-uk, Choi Seung-hyun, Roh Jae-won, and Won Ji-an.

But some fans reckon there could be other “missing characters” from the first round who might pop up again.

One eagle-eyed Redditor, @Longjumping-Cress845, speculated: “Those that didn’t return for the games.

“When players willingly returned to play more games 14 previous players did not return… Do you think these 14 players or one of him will be mentioned again? ” they pondered, before hinting: “Maybe they’ll be enticed to play the new games and join?”

A fiery debate erupted in the comments section, with a fan stating: “Those were the 14 smartest characters in the show and therefore we won’t ever see them again.”

The original poster shot back: “So you don’t think even one will make a return? They made it seem like they or one of em would be important.” (sic)

The commenter retorted: “The first season was made without the idea that there would even be a second season. We don’t even really get a good look at who the 14 are. Plus the games are invite only and it seems like it’s pretty alarming to the people who run the game that there would even be one returning player.”

Yet, some fans weren’t buying this explanation, as another chimed in: “The frontman mentioned to keep monitoring them though…”

“Wasn’t there a comment made by the Frontman to keep an eye on them?” another concurred.

Squid Game season 2 will be available to stream exclusively on Netflix from December 26.
