What do the Duolingo owl, Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show and his beef with Drake all have in common? Bizarrely, more than you’d ever expect…
You probably have no idea how Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl show, Drake and the death of Duolingo’s mascot are all connected.
At the event Kendrick performed his hit song Not Like Us, a diss track aimed at fellow rapper Drake after years of beef, despite him taking legal action to stop the performance.
Elsewhere, Duolingo mocked the Passionfruit singer in an advert immediately after the halftime show concluded. Duolingo’s mascot is a bright green cartoon owl, while Drake’s label OVO (October’s Very Own) is a gold outline of the same bird.
The official X/Twitter account for the language app advertised their new music course and shot some serious shade at Drake: “Learn A minor in our music course #SuperBowl,” in reference to Kendrick’s Not Like Us lyric: “Tryna strike a chord and it’s probably A minor.”
Social media was ablaze with comments about the beef: “Even Duolingo joining in the Kendrick/Drake battle,” read one tweet as another person typed: “Plz don’t get sued I need to learn Spanish.”
After this, Duolingo made a baffling announcement that stirred the pot even further. The statement was issued to social media and said: “It is with heavy hearts that we inform you that Duo, formally known as The Duolingo Owl, is dead.”
The comment sparked concern and confusion over Duo’s death, with the TikTok video racking up thousands of views and hundreds of comments speculating on the owl’s demise. Duolingo also posted a picture of the beloved owl with his tongue sticking out and two black Xs where his eyes should be.
“Authorities are currently investigating his cause of death and we are cooperating fully. Tbh, he probably died waiting for you to do your lesson, but what do we know? We’re aware he had many enemies…” hinted Duolingo.
Theories have been flooding the internet since the bizarre announcement, with many claiming Drake is responsible. One person said: “I fear I know who it was (Drake) but I won’t say his name out loud,” as the official Duolingo account replied: “Authorities are looking into a Canadian for the case.”
