Good Morning Britain was abruptly halted on Monday as Susanna Reid and Ed Balls shared a tragic breaking news update, just days after their on-air spat
On Good Morning Britain, Susanna Reid and Ed Balls stopped the show to announce some urgent breaking news.
In what seems to be Ukraine’s most significant drone attack on Russia in three years, a Russian civilian has died, and three others have been injured. The co-host, 54, took a moment to inform viewers of the critical situation, saying: “Ukraine has launched a major drone attack on Moscow in the early hours of this morning, killing at least one person and injuring others.”
Her colleague Ed chimed in with additional context: “It comes as high-stakes peace talks begin between The White House and Ukrainian officials – that’s happening in Saudi Arabia later today. The aim is to bring an end to the war in Russia.”
They then switched over to Richard Gaisford, reporting live from London’s Ministry of Defence. Speaking about the strike, Richard shared: “Ukraine sent more than 300 drones inside of Russia, many of them targeting what’s believed to be oil refineries outside of Moscow that supply the Russian military.”
He further noted that the drones also hit Russian troops in Kursk as they fight off Ukrainian forces on their territory, reports the Express.
With images and footage released, Gaisford detailed how Moscow’s air defences were seen trying to take down the drones. Wrapping up his report, he said: “All of this is happening as president Zelensky arrived in Saudi Arabia, meeting with leaders there who are hosting these talks that hope to come up with some sort of framework for a ceasefire, for a peace deal.”
He explained: “Zelensky will not sit down directly with the Americans. It’s the secretary of state Marco Rubio who is there representing the president of the United States. He said he is keen to see what concessions Ukrainian’s are willing to make.”
Moscow’s Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, reported that more than 70 drones aimed at Moscow were intercepted and destroyed.
Drones inflicted damage on seven flats within a residential block in the Ramensky district, plus vehicles were allegedly torched in a car park in Domodedovo district.
In total, Russia claims to have taken down 337 Ukrainian drones across 10 Russian territories. The Kursk region alone saw 126 drones neutralised.
Other regions under attack included Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh, as well as Kaluga, Lipetsk, Nizhny Novgorod, Oryol and Ryazan.
