The Northern Irish rap group have been referred to the Counter Terrorism Internet Referral Unit after a video emerged of one of the members making a statement in London in November 2023
The Northern Irish rap group Kneecap are being investigated by police after a member reportedly declared at a gig this year, “only a good Tory is a dead Tory.”
The same band member apparently followed up with a call to “kill your local MP.” Officers from the Met have confirmed they’re having a look at the footage, which also includes another clip from last year where one of the men seemed to cheer on the crowd with “up Hamas, up Hezbollah.” Officials are working through the videos to see if any terror laws have been breached, according to The Telegraph.
In the video, it looks like one of the trio has said: “We’re still under British occupation in Ireland. We still have old men in London making decisions that affect my life in Ireland.”
He then added: “And even worse, they’re f*****g Tories. The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local MP.”
A spokesperson for the Met told the Mirror: “We were made aware of a video on 22 April, believed to be from an event in November 2024, and it has been referred to the Counter Terrorism Internet Referral Unit for assessment and to determine whether any further police investigation may be required. We have also been made aware of another video believed to be from an event in November 2023.”
Another spokesperson, this time for No. 10, slammed the recent threats made against individuals, telling the Mirror: “We unequivocally condemn threatening remarks made towards any individual. Political intimidation and abuse must have no place in our society. We recognise the chilling effect that harassment and intimidation of elected representatives can have on our democracy. “.
They continued: “All reports of intimidation, harassment, and threats are taken extremely seriously. We work with the police and Parliament to do everything in our power to crack down on threats to elected officials.”
This statement comes in the wake of the group, consisting of Móglaí Bap, Mo Chara and DJ Próvaí, announcing their plans to take legal action over “false accusations of antisemitism'” following their performance at the Coachella music festival.
The rap trio faced a storm of criticism after concluding their set with on-screen messages that allegedly accused Israel of committing genocide and war crimes in Gaza.
One of the messages reportedly declared: “Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinian people.” Another message supposedly stated: “It is being enabled by the US government, who arm and fund Israel despite their war crimes.”
And the final message allegedly read: “F*** Israel. Free Palestine.”
Sharon Osbourne was among the first to publicly denounce the group, accusing them of “openly supporting terrorist organisations.”
She later allegedly suggested that their US visas should be cancelled. Defending themselves against the allegations, they stated on social media: “The recent attacks against us, largely emanating from the US, are based on deliberate distortions and falsehoods.”
They continued: “For over a year, we have used our shows to call out the British and Irish governments’ complicity in war crimes. The recent attacks against us, largely emanating from the US, are based on deliberate distortions and falsehoods.”
Their statement ended with: “We are taking action against several of these malicious efforts.”
