Comedy legend and Goldie Hawn’s pal Ruth Buzzi dies after stroke amid Alzheimer’s battle

Comedy star Ruth Buzzi has died.

The icon of 1970s television has passed away at the age of 88. The sad news was shared in a touching tribute on her official Facebook page, stating that she died peacefully on Monday [28 April] in Texas.

Privately battling Alzheimer’s since 2012, Buzzi also endured a severe stroke in 2022.

“Ruthie left us while peacefully sleeping yesterday evening at home. She’d been in hospice care, disabled from a stroke in 2022 following a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s ten years earlier,” her family shared on Facebook reports the Mirror.

Famed for her razor-sharp humour and memorable characters, Buzzi’s most significant role was on NBC’s revolutionary sketch comedy show Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In, airing from 1968 to 1973.

Her performances on the show won the comedian a Golden Globe and five Emmy nominations. She also shared the stage with Goldie Hawn before she became a Hollywood heavyweight.

Ruth also starred in Days of Our Lives, The Carol Burnett Show, Alvin and the Chipmunks, The Berenstain Bears, The Pink Panther, and 1976’s Freaky Friday.

Born on July 24, 1936, in Westerly, Rhode Island, she first found fame at 19 while touring with singer Rudy Vallee during a college summer break.

Buzzi battled Alzheimer’s since 2012

Her stint on the stage ignited her passion and following her school days, she headed to New York City. It wasn’t long before she landed a lead role in an off-Broadway musical revue, marking the beginning of nearly 20 East Coast performances.

1964 was a golden year for her career as it saw her TV debut on The Garry Moore Show. A year later she appeared on The Entertainers.
