The Secret Lives Of Mormon Wives is finally back for a second season, but the cast certainly won’t be celebrating by popping bottles of champagne or even clinking beer glasses
If there’s one thing that Mormons love potentially just as much as Jesus, it’s soda – or fizzy pop, to us in the UK.
It became a talking point in Disney+ show The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives season one. In one episode, Layla Taylor, Jessi Ngatikaura and Demi Engemann were talking about “dirty soda” and their obsession with them.
One of them even referred to the drink as “Mormon crack”. Demi explained: “We don’t drink alcohol or do drugs, so it’s kind of our vice.”
However, considering the premise of the show started with a “soft swinging” scandal, it would seem alcohol would be the least of their worries.
So as The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives returns for season two, we take a look into their soda obsession.
Why don’t Mormons drink alcohol?
No alcohol is one of many rules that Mormons follow. It comes from a code of health called the Word of Wisdom.
Mormons believe that Prophet Joseph Smith got the Word of Wisdom as a revelation from God, and it is now part of the scripture called the Doctrine and Covenants.
In it, they say they are told to abstain from harmful substances. This includes alcohol, but also includes “hot drinks” such as coffee or tea – though herbal tea is apparently allowed.
Instead, they drink a what they call “dirty soda”.
What is a “dirty soda”?
A “dirty soda” isn’t just a glass of Pepsi or Sprite. They’re fancier versions, more reminiscent of an elaborate Starbucks order.
They pump various flavours, syrups and creams into sparkling water and each of them have their own, very specific taste.
Demi, for example, takes a 44oz (1.3 litres) cup of sparkling water, with sugar-free syrups in coconut, vanilla, raspberry, pineapple and then coconut cream which she says is “chef’s kiss”.
Taylor Frankie Paul even says at one point: “Six out of the seven days of the week, I’m having at least one 44oz soda. I’m probably only going to live to like 50, but it makes me happy.”
Hopefully season two of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives will have even more weird “dirty soda” recipes for fans to try, as they went viral on social media.
