Shrek was released 24 years ago today and Daily Star is taking a look back at all the hidden Easter Eggs you definitely never spotted when you were younger
Shrek is way naughtier than you realise.
The iconic Dreamworks films starring Michael Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz, is undeniably one of the biggest franchises in the world, but you may not have realised the hidden Easter Egg
Lord Farquaad’s name is one of the cheekiest jokes sprinkled throughout the franchise, aimed at adults watching with their youngsters.
The monarch’s unusual name is pronounced Far-kwaad, which sounds very similar to a popular American insult. Change the “ar” to a letter “u” and you’ll see what they were getting at.
The entire series pokes fun at traditional fairytales and at one point, Peter Pan can be seen trying to sell Tinkerbell while she’s trapped in a cage. Gepetto also tried to flog Pinocchio, the wooden puppet he created as a son.
There are a number of darker jokes that you may not have spotted on your first watch. The characters Mama, Papa and Baby bear are an obvious nod to the Goldilocks fairytale and audiences first meet them as a whole family.
However, later on Papa and Baby bear can be seen crying together and soon viewers find out why. As the film cuts to Lord Farquaad’s castle, the shot shows a bear-skin rug with a pink bow placed on it’s head…bear-y disturbing indeed!
Gingerbread Man is an iconic Shrek character, with his high-pitched voice, quotable quips and “gumdrop buttons”. At one point, Lord Farquaad captures the lovable Gingy and keeps him on a baking tray in the castle dungeon while waterboarding him with milk in an attempt to make him talk.
Speaking of the royal, one saucy scene shows him naked in bed while flicking through a roster of potential princess suitors.
After landing on Princess Fiona, Lord Farquaad pulls the blanket closer to his chest as though trying to cover up his, shall we say, excitement?
Directly above the monarch’s bed is a huge painting of Lord Farquaad himself, looming ominously over where he sleeps and, well, does whatever else he likes to do in the bedroom.
