Ed Sheeran believes he was worked too hard by adults in his youth.

The Suffolk star was gigging throughout his teens before finding stardom at the tender age of 20 with debut single The A Team.

But he felt huge pressure to be successful.

He said: “Now that I am the age of some of the people that were being weird with me when I was 18, I can’t imagine being like that to an 18-year-old.

“Like, if I saw an 18-year-old being successful I would just be like, ‘great, that is really good’, but the emotional pressure that older people were putting on me at that point is really weird.

“I find it really f***ing weird that anyone older would do that to a teenager.”

As a result, Ed didn’t cope with fame easily and has opened up about his drinking and partying to compensate.

He previously said: “Having a couple of beers is one thing. But having a bottle of vodka is another thing. It’s just a realisation of, ‘I’m getting into my thirties, ‘grow up! You’ve partied, you’ve had this experience. Be happy with that and just be done’.”

Ed reckons it’s partly down to the people he was surrounded by: “I don’t think I would’ve worked any less, I like working, I like touring, I like singing but I think most of the things in the first six/seven years of my life were down to people and how they reacted.

“And so the circle that I have now if I had it back then I would’ve been totally fine.”

These days Ed has a healthier work/life balance and never tours for more than “four or five days” without seeing his wife Cherry Seaborn for special sexy time

Stressing the importance of ‘adult’ date nights Ed smiled: “We have a date night every week where we have no distractions and we are not allowed to talk about children at all on the date night.

“You need to feel young and that you fancy each other and that you want to like… I don’t know, feel the connection again…”
