Harry Potter icon Emma Watson banned from driving after doing 38mph in 30 zone

Harry Potter icon Emma Watson has been banned from driving after pleading guilty to speeding. The actress was charged by post after doing 38mph in a 30 zone last July in Banbury, Oxford. She chose to have a full court hearing despite already pleading guilty, but did not attend the five-minute hearing.

Emma has been banned from driving for six months. She has also been told to pay £1,044. During the hearing, the court was told she already had nine points on her licence, which led to her ban.

The case was heard at High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court on July 16. It was believed she may try and mitigate the charges by claiming she had some sort of mitigating circumstances.

The 35-year-old was caught speeding on July 31, 2025. She was driving her £30,000 blue Audi S3 when she set of a speed camera on Banbury Road.

Emma had been studying a creative writing course at the University of Oxford at the time. However it’s since been reported that she did not finish that and instead starting a PhD in Philosophy.

The star found fame at the young age of 10 in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. She appeared as Hermione Granger in all of the films.

After the hugely popular movies came to an end, Emma appeared in a handful of other movies, including The Bling Ring and the live-action adaptation of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.

Her last major acting role was in 2019’s Little Women, which also starred Florench Pugh, Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet.

Her main focus became her studies, and she started a master’s degree in creative writing in September 2023.

Her new PhD course will last three years in total, having started it in 2024.

A source told Mail Online: “She mingles among other students, and blends into the background. But she does attend social events and is often spotted with her books and her boyfriend at local coffee shops.

“She started last year – she loves Oxford and has made a happy life for herself there.”

Outside of studying, Emma has fronted a number of environmental charity campaigns.

However she’s also had other trouble with her car, after she was filmed trying to talk tow-truck drivers out of taking away her Audi after she blocked a car park and ignored a “no parking” sign at a Stratford-upon-Avon pub last year.
